How, and why, successive US administrations pressured the Ukrainians to give up their nuclear weapons in return for meaningless security guarantees. From George Bogden, who will soon publish a book on this subject: https://nationalinterest.org/feature/deceit-dread-and-disbelief-story-how-ukraine-lost-its-nuclear-arsenal-207076

@unnameduser @long_cougar @anneapplebaum They gave up their nuclear program. North Korea has built a nuclear program in a short period of time. Ukrainians techs have been managing the largest nuclear power station in Europe, but they know nothing of the technology? It's strange to think that all Soviet knowledge ended up in Russia, and disappeared from the other countries.

@anneapplebaum so their whole attempt to prevent nuclear proliferation backfired. No sane country with nukes would want to give them up now and follow Ukraine's example.

    MarcCLA,

@anneapplebaum This mistake should be corrected immediately. What could Putin do if we just gave Ukraine some nukes back? Really nothing. If he starts a nuclear war he dies. He could give his scariest allies nukes too: except North Korea already had them and we all know Iran will anyway in 5-10 years. So he could just shrug, like we did when North Korea got them. And then the war ends and we get peace. Peace takes guts.

Can't wait to read. Wasn't aware of Biden's role. Democrats' policies towards Russia have always been disastrous, with Ukraine paying the price. Hopefully, rhe new generation of Ukrainian leaders learned thr leason and are busy doing what is necesaary to save the country ans tbe nation.
The story is also a crucial lesson for Poland.

@anneapplebaum The US has a long track record of giving up too much, in order to maintain dominance in one crucial sector: fossil fuels

From far too much vested interest in cheap (abusive) Chinese labor through massive imports imbalances, to incremental 'Westernizing' of Russia through Capitalist firms operating even within Moscow; the consistent aim has always been to keep the fossil fuels industry, and its shareholders - which include politicians that write policy for said industry - at peak profit margins. Keep in mind that maintaining various levels of conflict around the world, lends heavily to the armaments industry feeding fossil fuels profits, that much more. Capitalism is too much, and Communism is too little.

@anneapplebaum so Ukraine should have kept the nukes ?

@anneapplebaum I don’t think our helping Ukraine is meaningless. And fewer nukes is fewer nukes.

@anneapplebaum Woo Hoo genocidal weapons of mass destruction that can trigger nuclear winter and global crop failure!

Who can doubt that deterrence would work because Putin is certainly a rational actor.
