@otheorange_tag My (untimely deceased) cousin used to play tuba and bass trombone in whatever orchestras it was that he was playing in. :) Though he was mostly a music educator and marching band choreographer.

@otheorange_tag (Tuba is called on so infrequently, even in the big orchestra, that one of course needs a second instrument, if considering making it one’s profession.)

@chemoelectric Our basses are in a crescent so we can see each other, our tuba is just to the right of bass #4 and we do compare notes while playing.

@otheorange_tag Thumbs up!

I merely have a collection of keyless recorders, flutes, and tinwhistles that I cannot play, largely because I have chronic hand pain that keeps me from even trying to learn. I did play clarinet a bit as a kid.

@otheorange_tag My wife has her cello from when she played, but unfortunately it is not in working condition. And we have my late father-in-law’s old saxophone, but neither of us can play it (though those are very similar to clarinets, of course).

@chemoelectric What's wrong with the cello? BTW I started learning the bass at 49-50? never too late to pick up stuff. I have done some minor luthier stuff, if you know someone who is handy, just make sure they know to use hide glue. etc. Prolly safer to take it to someone

@otheorange_tag Something is broken by a third person mishandling, decades ago. She doesn’t want to get it fixed. It’s none of my business.

@chemoelectric I can feel arthritis, I'm 61. I come from the "Big" Louie (the old guy next to me #2 bass) school of play until you literally can't I watched my grandma play the organ until almost the day she died with pretty bad arthritis. I have a flute I can kinda play, and an oboe that I wouldn't subject my cat to my playing.

@otheorange_tag I turn 62 next month. But what matters more is I have fibromyalgia, especially in the hands. Also chronic migraine with sound hypersensitivity.

@otheorange_tag I have a boxwood flute, and boxwood is both relatively light and pretty quiet, but, still .....

chemoelectric,
@chemoelectric@masto.ai avatar

@otheorange_tag Also the flute has the holes arranged so I don’t have to reach as far.

@chemoelectric@masto.ai avatar

@otheorange_tag I am typing this on a special device BTW.

@chemoelectric I taught myself a lot on the bass (coming from teaching myself on the cello) with occasional words of wisdom from musician peers. I started by trying to balance the pain of muscles in both arms equally. Ended with me playing the bass sitting on a stool with the bass at a celloish angle. I've been experimenting with playing standing up off and on, but I need to watch more vids

@otheorange_tag One of W**d* lln’s early characters played cello in the marching band. Maybe his methods could be adapted to bass.

@chemoelectric yikes. I've been afraid to go to the doc.

@otheorange_tag Osteoarthritis just is. :) My worst spot for it is the right knee, which I damaged when younger.

@otheorange_tag I don’t like going to docs, but was at the neurologist just yesterday. Every 3 months I get injections of Botox in spots around my head and shoulders, for the migraine.
