Welp, just booked my hotel room for the worldcon in Glasgow next August. Non-refundable, so I guess I'm going to be there …

@cstross are they doing Worldcon member discounts yet?

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@adrianhon No, but I'm not waiting for the reservation block to be released—I'll save at most £10/night and this way I know I've got it nailed down before the rush. (For me it's a business event.) Most of the rooms will be in hotels further away from the SEC so rooms in the Crowne Plaza usually go early.

@cstross Have fun!

@LianaBrooks I'm probably going to the 2025 worldcon in Seattle as well, but 2024's just 40 minutes away by train and I've been to the two previous Glasgow worldcons, so it's a bit of a no-brainer.

@cstross this far in advance I'd hope it was super cheap

@coldclimate

They only accept bookings 12 months in advance. So I rocked up on August 9th and ... nope, cheapest was £600/night! Prices have now dropped to much less than half that but it's still a pricey hotel. I'm paying for proximity to the event, basically (and I expect to use my room for meetings).

@cstross £600 a night is ouch territory. I once went to check out and discovered the price I thought was for 3 nights was intact the daily rate. Never again

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@coldclimate They're doing bathtub-curve pricing and I hate it.

bellinghman,
@bellinghman@wandering.shop avatar

@cstross @coldclimate I presume it's a suite so that meetings work. And yeah, I'm seeing £270+ a night for the one suite option that's not sold out

Us? We're booked into the Premier Inn across the river, at least until the staff tranche at the CP is released

@bellinghman @coldclimate Remember it rains in Glasgow! A lot ☔️

bellinghman,
@bellinghman@wandering.shop avatar

@cstross @coldclimate We can buy a lot of umbrellas for that price difference!

(Even allowing for the wind destroying one a day)

@cstross @coldclimate You probably should make clearer that this is not what the average fan will pay, because if I had thought about going, reading £600 a night would have made me stop right there. (Yes, you mentioned using it for meetings, but not exactly what that meant in terms of room size.)

And this whole non-refundable trend is the pits.

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@eleeper @coldclimate I'm not paying £600 a night! I'm paying a bunch less than half that for a suite. That's what the hotel wanted for bookings a whole 12 months ahead of the event. Like I said: bathtub curve pricing sucks.
