yeah perhaps giving the cops access to dna databases, selling it to insurance companies, refusing deletion requests and skimping on security and getting popped dont really give folks a sense their data is safe with 23andme, and im willing to bet thats impacting their bottom line

dirkhh,

@Viss
I never understood why anyone would give them their DNA. From the start that seemed like an epically bad idea.

@dirkhh @paul_ipv6 because in the beginning they were a little startup and never made it clear they planned on behaving this way. also, ten years ago the security landscape was very different, and they likely had different leadership

@Viss

I've written it before and I'll write again. I am so happy I decided not to trust 23and me.

krypt3ia,

@Viss But, capitalism!

@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@krypt3ia cant wait for fucking amazon ads based on my genetic profiling

krypt3ia,

@Viss @krypt3ia Fuuuuuck

krypt3ia,

@Viss @krypt3ia I said it the other day, but, we truly are in the panopticon now.

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@krypt3ia we've been in it for a while, i wager. what we're seeing now is the monetization of that reality.

cant wait for the apple neckproblem(tm) to leak iris scans to bypass optical biometric systems

krypt3ia,

@Viss @krypt3ia We doomed

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@krypt3ia kinda jealous of all the preppers who had a bunker installed, or folks rich enough to afford an off grid cabin/compound in the woods

darkuncle,

@Viss @krypt3ia for that particular threat, at least, I have reasonably high confidence it won’t happen (due to the way Apple handles biometrics and the Secure Enclave). Requisite docs: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT214051

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@darkuncle @krypt3ia sure. the 'just trust us' model. like when cjunkie pulled their pants down with their unhackable fingerprint reader

darkuncle,

@Viss @krypt3ia fair point (but bypassing biometrics is a different risk than leaking them)

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@darkuncle @krypt3ia all im saying is that giving apple the benefit of the doubt has, on multiple occasions, proven to be a mistake, and it would be a mistake to do it again here

krypt3ia,

@Viss @darkuncle @krypt3ia And we’re back to capitalism

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@krypt3ia @darkuncle apple and google are very similar.

one is an advertising company so people expect this shit.

the other is an advertising company disguised as a design company, and people gasp and pearl clutch when the supposed design company is caught looting PII and logs and data like an advertising company would

wheres that comic with the spider in the glass box?

darkuncle,

@Viss @krypt3ia their entire brand is privacy and premium-ness; the second that perception erodes will be the beginning of the end. Maybe advertising revenue is the heroin of business models: just too addictive to quit if you ever start.

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@darkuncle @krypt3ia apple has been in the news a lot lately because theyve been caught lying about their privacy nonsense
