Speaking of Apple Pass shenanigans, has anyone discovered a way to make the QR code be physically larger? It would make scanning them at the door much easier. We often struggle with it.

I'm like 99% sure the answer is "you can't" but maybe someone has figured out a workaround using images or something that I haven't thought of.

E.g. in this picture I want the white box to be the full width of the phone:

@jwz I think you’re SOL. Looking at the spec it shows a physical layout that doesn’t ever allow the code to be taller, even if the space above it isn’t used. The auxiliary spaces above aren’t any taller. The only way you’re getting more real estate is using a code that can be horizontally wider.

If you’re stuck with QR can you have less information in the QR code itself? That gets you a simpler pattern that should scan better.

@donw Can I have less than seven characters in the QR code? No I cannot.

@jwz I second the "light box" approach. a small 5 W desk lamp pointed down.

1- It will convince phones to increase their brightness, which allows any optical system better able to capture a clear image.

2- I needed a desk lamp for a seemingly laser based traditional barcode scanner. I thought it was lit by the laser, but it wasn't enough apparently; it wouldn't scan in the dark.

@trouble All of you people telling me "you're holding it wrong" are super helpful, A++ would take help again.

@jwz Just scaling the image (preserving aspect ratio) seems to work with my example "Foo" QR code image. In fact I had to scale it to a sensible size to read it in the first place.

Just experiment.

@grumpygrimnir "Just experiment!" Why, that is just the fatuous advice that I, a child, was seeking!

@grumpygrimnir @jwz Yes. I've got a bunch of PDFs for train tickets for today, and I just zoom in to expand the code. If the Apple Pass doesn't permit that, it's broken

(Why yes, I have implemented QR Codes. Part of my testing used to be to read one across a room on a monitor)

@bellinghman "Just zoom in", what an amazing insight you have provided.

@jwz I got the impression that you were unable to do that. If the complaint is that the code ought to fill the available width, I agree that would be nice. But the scanners really shouldn't be having any problem with this - what you showed is clear, and assuming the code is generated correctly, ought to be scannable when waved in the general direction of a scanner

@bellinghman Again, super helpful and actionable reply, A++ would read again.
