merchantHelios,

Need someone to explain to me if there are any meaningful differences between arch, manjaro, and artix. I know manjaro used to be the "it's arch but with a gui installer" but now that arch has that as an option, I have no clue anymore

veff,
@veff@poa.st avatar

@merchantHelios used manjaro for a while but arch has come a ways to make it irrelevant. artix is for spergs who hate systemd (yes I know the reasoning why, I don't disagree but you're still a sperg)

merchantHelios,

@veff right i got that much (enough to where im not really considering using manjaro), but is there meaningful difference between arch and artix if i'm not a sperg about systemd (i also know the reasoning, but i only care if it will actually effect performance of everyday tasks + games)

veff,
@veff@poa.st avatar

@merchantHelios no there's literally no difference for the average user. use whatever works

merchantHelios,

@veff noted. going with artix for now since i have the iso on a usb already. this seems like the sort of thing i'll be heavily opinionated on in like 2 years time, but if theres no difference for the average user i'll take your word on it in the meantime

veff,
@veff@poa.st avatar

@merchantHelios If my past present and future self could communicate with each other, they'd probably be arguing about distros instead of anything useful

EdBoatConnoisseur,
@EdBoatConnoisseur@poa.st avatar

@merchantHelios @veff please don't use anything arch based/related, it is contaminated with judaism and trannyism down to the package manager.

merchantHelios,

@EdBoatConnoisseur @veff ok what do you recommend then? i looked at Void because i thought it sounded interesting but apparently the day to day experience is "annoying" to a lot of people, down to the package manager. I have done a gentoo install before on an old laptop and i'm not eager to do that again. I'd prefer not to use a distro so focused on stability it ends up being a year+ to get new drivers or whatever, i hear that's somewhat common too. I dont trust ubuntu at all, and I also dont want babbies first linux with Mint or what have you, since I like to think that I have above room temp IQ. So im looking for something else until i get off my ass and do Linux From Scratch to make myself HeliOS (just so i can make the pun, if not only for the learning experience)

EdBoatConnoisseur,
@EdBoatConnoisseur@poa.st avatar

@merchantHelios @veff honestly just do what i do, do a devuan netinstall, then change the repo to unstable (ceres) and enjoy, i mean that is if you want a minimal blank canvas to start with without having to go through all the arch retardation of manually doing shit for no benefit when a bunch scripts type all the commands.

another solid option is to use siduction if ya don't mind the systemd and want something ready to use without needing to install some basic packages.

those are my top options, but mind you i'm very opinionated and half way around making my own distro, so in a near future i hope i will be able to tell ya guys "just download the iso, install and start pirating as much as you want" but my 2 biggest hurdles are fixing my crappy code (sorry not white enough to have shit work at first try) and write documentation (i hate writing)

merchantHelios,

@EdBoatConnoisseur @veff i'll be honest i havent heard of either of those before but ill give them a look

merchantHelios,

@EdBoatConnoisseur @veff also, to either one of you - what are your opinions on using wayland over Xorg? "im doing this because im a contrarian" type software?

veff,
@veff@poa.st avatar

@merchantHelios @EdBoatConnoisseur isn't Wayland new? If it works and isn't gay, then I'd adopt it.

merchantHelios,

@veff @EdBoatConnoisseur arewewaylandyet.com/
wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wayland#
maybe? i'm unsure how much of this matters but the list seems decently feature complete... I am honestly not educated on Xorg beyond "online spergs say its atrocious bloat"

EdBoatConnoisseur,
@EdBoatConnoisseur@poa.st avatar

@merchantHelios @veff wayland is a mixed bag, for some it works for others not great, i do not see it being even close to what was promised a decade ago

merchantHelios,

@EdBoatConnoisseur @veff honestly as long as it isnt buggy enough to horrifically ruin an average day-to-day desktop experience i am currently not technical enough to care that much. my main priority at the moment is

  • get a promising dualboot setup up and running with minimal bloat (but not so minimal that the OS isn't usable for me)
  • see what games i can get to work, hopefully with a performance gain over win10
  • (ideally) slowly transition to using windows less and less
rher,
@rher@mugicha.club avatar

Do you use an Nvidia graphics card? This is very important because if you do you won't be able to play games using Wayland.

merchantHelios,

@rher @EdBoatConnoisseur @veff no i mentioned elsewhere in the thread i have an all-red system. ryzen 5 5600 and an RX 6700 XT

graf,
@graf@poa.st avatar
merchantHelios,

@graf @rher @EdBoatConnoisseur @veff its surprisingly comfy, i had a lot more driver issues with my old intel cpu in my first built pc

graf,
@graf@poa.st avatar

@merchantHelios @rher @EdBoatConnoisseur @veff i refuse to buy intel cpus im just fucking with you. i got burned in the past by amd gpus so i've bought all nvidia since. 7700x/64gb/3070ti

EdBoatConnoisseur,
@EdBoatConnoisseur@poa.st avatar

@merchantHelios @veff and then there are issues when it comes to 2 fronts, standarization, which is non existant, and rendering, in wayland the "compositor" is the one who renders frames, however anything video related renders it's video frames regardless of the compositor's refresh rate, so it can be a mess, or not, is a mixed bag, some developers like the mpv and pcsx2 guys hate wayland's rendeing pipeline with a passion, for others it doesn't matter.

mischievoustomato,
@mischievoustomato@rebased.taihou.website avatar

i do many kinds of shit and wayland just werks but i dont use nor ever used nvidia gpus

merchantHelios,

@mischievoustomato @veff @EdBoatConnoisseur oh yeah my whole system is amd, which i suppose helps me out in the software choice dept when it comes to linux

mischievoustomato,
@mischievoustomato@rebased.taihou.website avatar

byeah, it should be fine . I have a simple laptop and everything I do works fine, haven't used xorg for 2 years now

mischievoustomato,
@mischievoustomato@rebased.taihou.website avatar

but something I preach is to try things for yourself. Be it software or hardware

kirby,

@EdBoatConnoisseur @merchantHelios @veff pacman is fast but if you have no idea of what you're doing you can run into.... Problems to say the least, namely leftover dependency packages. Auto remove doesn't exist in pacman from my understanding

EdBoatConnoisseur,
@EdBoatConnoisseur@poa.st avatar

@merchantHelios @veff i mean it, arch not even once!

sarvo,
@sarvo@novoa.nagoya avatar

@EdBoatConnoisseur @merchantHelios @veff I use deuvan artix and endeavour, deuvan feels more solid but unless you are setting up some server stuff it doesn't really matter or is any better to arch based in a day to day use.

I really really like the aur, it makes things simpler.

Humpleupagus,
@Humpleupagus@eveningzoo.club avatar

Manjaro claims to have a more stable and tested repository than arch. Also, if you're using multiple window managers, majaro will automatically setup / shutdown the various services involved as needed, for example, if you're using i3wm and plasma on the same box, kwin doesn't run if you login to i3.

mischievoustomato,
@mischievoustomato@rebased.taihou.website avatar

a lot of things just support systemd distros and supporting those things in nom systemd distros requires patches or hacks whoch can increase maintenance burden for the devs which I don't consider kino, and might introduce bugs or unintended behavior

EdBoatConnoisseur,
@EdBoatConnoisseur@poa.st avatar

@veff @merchantHelios systemd is the judaism virus for the linux ecosystem.

veff,
@veff@poa.st avatar

@EdBoatConnoisseur @merchantHelios I don't like pottering either but linux will forever be a balancing act of "this is freedom" and "this is not broken constantly"

the only thing ive used that handles this balance well is debian and opensuse and "balance" is subjective.

mischievoustomato,
@mischievoustomato@rebased.taihou.website avatar

manjaro is not trusty at all. Avoid. If you need an easy to install arch distro, try endeavour os
> systemd hate
dumb imo, but i appreciate people that do whatveer they want porperly
