In my mind, there is no market explanation for Big Data. There is no market for AI that makes sense. These things cannot possibly make money on the scale necessary to repay their costs, which have been enormous already.
There are however, very clear oppressive political uses for data gathering, and flooding the market with lies that look like the truth, and seeding distrust of news, and making it impossible to search for trustworthy information.
