Is @signalapp becoming to have a problem?

I have been approached by 3 women now that have some reason to talk to me and then want to become Friends which is suspicious.

Anyone else having the same experience?

The pictures are all somewhat asian women - and none have a phone number, all have signal id's.

@mcfly @signalapp predictable, but didn’t expect it this fast

@mkoek i had not expected it. Signal has been always spam free for me. @signalapp

@mcfly @signalapp that's weird. Signal still requires a phone number to sign up. Is your username short or simple?

@besendorf My username is relatively short. Its my nick with .42 behind it.

That should not be the problem.

I mean my phone number was not precisely secret before either...

If that is a problem that sounds like a conceptual problem in the username approach in signal.

@mcfly @besendorf @signalapp Hm, I don't have that problem (yet?). My phone number isn't publicly known much, but my signal name I shared here on the Fedi :'-)

And it's also quite simple, ljrk.161...

@ljrk Dunno if the more or less widely known phone number played a role - precisely at the moment where signal changed to usernames..... @besendorf @signalapp

@mcfly It's been having some of it, even before the names. I've been seeing it on numbers with very wide circulation - basically, a new form of phone spam. They obviously hide their number, and it makes things a little easier for them because you can't report the number directly, or elsewhere.

So, I guess... yes?

@promovicz I have never had spam before on Signal and i use it since years.

My phone number is not precisely secret (as common in the Netherlands).

@mcfly But recent years were pretty different. Society was all-online for a couple of years, and so were spammers and data brokers. You know how easily those things can get lost...

@promovicz that is true.... :-)
