the truly tragic thing about the star wars prequels is how almost-good they were. there were so many good ideas in those movies… but also so many terrible ones
@astrid yeah absolutely, attack of the clones too tbh. the phantom menace would need a lot more work but it also could have been good, in a different timeline.
the prequels deserve a reboot tbh, not even a remake just a full retelling
@dangerdyke honestly the biggest tweak I think they should have made was getting rid of the whole "oops padme decided to just unexist" thing, and explicitly have it be that anakin injured her so much that she died during childbirth
@astrid yeah that’s one thing. i think in the prequels as a whole just, making anakin more likable. they’re trying to do the sympathetic antihero thing but they utterly fail to make him sympathetic. and while we’re at it, rework the entire romance subplot with padme. we just don’t understand what george lucas thought she saw in anakin, it makes no sense
obi-wan really carried the prequels, all the stuff with him was excellent
@dangerdyke@astrid like i cant even call it a forced romantic subplot, its actually very relevant to the main story, but it just feels completely forced and unnatural
@coolbean@astrid i also feel like it would have been a lot more relatable if it was gay. the whole “forbidden love” thing just feels so cliche when its hets
though admittedly that would complicate the entire raison d’etre of the romance plot (making luke and leia exist)
@astrid@dangerdyke honestly make it so that he survived being burned by the lava because he used the force to draw life from her if we're keeping the whole monkey's paw situation of the darth plagueis thing.
