Trump is now making "I won't let them take your cars away from you" a major campaign point, playing very effectively into pushback by people who don't want to be forced into EVs by government mandates. The more Biden pushes this, the more he plays into Trump's hands.

@lauren A problem with EVs is that around here (east Kentucky) it's very common for folks to keep their cars for 10-20 years. Folks are very self sufficient and will maintain their cars for decades. You can even get a brand new engine for a few hundred dollars and keep vehicles going for ages. Besides our considerable lack of charging infrastructure around here, nobody is going to buy an EV and at 10 years old spend more on replacement batteries than the value of the car.

@gerowen That's just one reason. If you can't charge at home, the logic of an EV for most people -- even who want to be as "green" as possible, drops close to zero. As the early adopters dry out, it's going to go downhill fast.

@lauren @gerowen what's the plan for CO2 emissions, then? Small cars? "I won't let Biden force you into tiny toy cars!" All the alternatives are even less popular.

@dr2chase @gerowen Go ahead. Push it. Trump gets back in, and rolls everything back 10 years. Or maybe 20. "Cutting off nose to spite face." Biden will LOSE pushing climate change and anything related. That's just a fact. But hey, want Trump? Try the climate change pitch this year!

@lauren The problem with that argument is anything vaguely progressive that Biden does will “play into Trump’s hands” (and doing progressive things energizes Biden’s base).

lauren,

@michaelgemar Sure, but EVs are particularly potent one, especially since the EV mandates as they exist are entirely unrealistic.

@lauren I’m all in favour of realistic policies, but we can’t let conspiratorial crazies determine what government does.

lauren,
@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org avatar

@michaelgemar You don't need conspiracies to know the EV mandates are nuts.

@michaelgemar You need independents in swing states much more than energizing Biden's base.
