Looking for search engines that actually return anything relevant without having to comb through low quality/generated content or ads (so not Google/Bing ranked). Plus if it doesn't "hides" forums et al 🙄 Which one would you recommend based on experience? #search #searchEngine #metasearch
Boost for reach 🥰

@ncrav I find SearX to be excellent.

@greenpete nice! I've deployed it in the past but I need to give it a thorough check again 🙂

@ncrav: yo, give us a try. We plan to focus on our index in the future. Hosted and made in EU. We know we aren't the ideal choice & are looking for feedback in order to improve.

@svmetasearch hi! Ok I'll give it a try 🙂

@ncrav Have you thought about Whoogle? Whoogle is the only one I have tried. I have self-hosted it myself and disabled all telemetry. I have tried DuckDuckGo but I just never was a fan of the design / interface and Stylus can only do so much to fix that.

Though, I will say that this whole AI stuff is getting annoying. It just seems way overdone and how Microsoft & Windows is forcing copilot down everyone’s throats just ticks me off. I ended up leaving Windows for Linux because of that.

@zachmurphy hmm I think I never came across Whoogle, is it similar to searx? I had this one self hosted for a while but eventually had to change server and never got it back. Yeah I think the gen AI stuff just made all those fast low quality sites/blogs that end up ranking high even worse. I would prefer to look at multiple pages of search than to realise I just lost my time reading something that either makes no sense or doesn't contain any real info.

@ncrav mojeek feels as useless as google, qwant has ties with ms and huawei. metager didnt bring me any serious help either while digging through the web. im juggling between brave, ddg and startpage nowadays.

@brawnybunkbedbuddy is startpage much different than google? I was under the (probably wrong) impression they used their results as-is. I've been juggling between those three listed plus yahoo, but can't really find anything useful either 🙄

@ncrav it supposedly keeps google from tracking you but you know how it is nowadays, you cant be sure with such claims. at least shown results are bit different from ddg and brave and thats something. also, mind that while ddg doesnt shut up how private it is it still pushes all inquiries thru "improving.duckduckgo.com" which cannot be disabled- i blocked it with ublock origin

@brawnybunkbedbuddy oh I see, have to recheck my assumptions regarding startpage xD yeah I heard that DDG was rather sneaky on that front as well. I probably will have to give them all a try again. It would be nice to have a good foundation/coop owned engine that would focus on providing something useful. I'd probably pay at this time since it would be almost a health and wellbeing being expense 😅 but well... thank you for all the info 🙂
