The term "Propaganda" gets an emotional response from many as connotations of state actors nefariously producing material to change people's minds yet the techniques used in propaganda are still used to this day in advertising. Using basic skills one can unwrap many of the tricks advertisers use to persuade people to buy their product.

@Dianora there’s also the problem that a decade of statistical investigation of targeted advertising have found that many propaganda techniques are far less effective than expected. Much of its effectiveness seems to come from a lack of counter-messaging and people seeking leadership.

@npilon Sure that's the other half. Those that have the money can roll out a lot of propaganda in a short time. So much for the concept of "The marketplace of ideas" which is commonly trotted out. The marketplace of ideas can only work when there is equal access to the media.

@Dianora yeah “flooding the zone with shit” seems to be the most effective actual technique. Everything else is noise.
