Microsoft: use OneDrive to save your shit!

@piepants @fetchezlavache a base windows 11 install has you saving all your data in your documents folder to OneDrive by default. It's annoying to have to diagnose that functionality in the first place. When you do turn onedrive sync off, your files disappear from your local computer too! Such user hostile design ...

@niten @fetchezlavache Microsoft have been getting gradually more user hostile every year. And with their big pivot to AI and tendency to over share data with "partners", I don't trust them at all with my data anymore.

Linux is now my daily driver, and I only ever boot into Windows for things that don't run properly under Linux. Which is basically just games and Affinity Photo. If I can fix my eGPU drivers under Linux, that will help.

@piepants @niten when I run out of space on Mega, I think I would pay one of you guys to host my shit !

@fetchezlavache @niten my new NAS/server has been doing quite a good job of hosting my shit... I've moved to apps like Immich and Syncthing to get away from dependence on Google and Microsoft. I'll be doing a blog post on my setup soon. It's a bit of work, but worth it imo.

@piepants

What is that NAS?

I’ve got a basic setup with Immich, Jellyfin, etc. though I’m not sure I trust myself enough as a system admin to rely on it as my main thing 😳

I switched to Proton for de-Googling and de-MSing, though still deep in the Apple walled garden

@FlockOfCats it's a custom build (the case is a Jonsbo N4 with a Ryzen 5600G mobo and CPU). It's running Proxmox with a bunch of VMs, and stuff like Plex, Actual Budget and Immich running in Docker on one of them.

I'll do the full writeup on it soon.

@piepants cool will look forward to it 🤓
