Delta is still top of the US App Store. Pent…up…demand for great software not allowed on iOS for ages 😊

@matt Everyone is pointing at this one (copyright-infringing?) app as proof of pent-up demand, but I think it would be more convincing if there were TEN new apps at the top of the list. Just a single new app feels like more of an anomaly than a confirmation.

@DavidAnson I mean it’s the third app to climb the charts quickly, the other 2 just got taken down.

Not sure what you mean by copyright infringement here, though? The app itself is just like the many other emulators that exist legally elsewhere. A user may use them to play games they got illegally, but that’s the same as web browsers.

@matt It doesn’t feel like the best poster child is all. :) That said, it may still be far too early to draw conclusions either way.

@matt I’m curious about your comparison to a web browser, but understand if you don’t want to debate that here. :)

In my mind, an emulator like that exists to enable people to play copyrighted games they have often obtained through questionable means. Which is not the case for a web browser which just shows content on the web. Some of that content may have legal issues itself, but all of the content is specifically intended by its publisher to be displayed by the web browser.

@DavidAnson So a large percentage of people surely play pirated content, but I would say that’s not the emulator developer’s fault, which is how courts have rules in the past on this issue.

There are homebrew games and there are easy ways to make personal digital copies of old games (much harder with new games) which I’ve done myself and MacStories wrote about yesterday.

I guess it’s like how you can build a file sharing app, but one gets in trouble for pirating movies, not that Plex exists.

@matt @DavidAnson Well, it's technically true but similar to torrent trackers, which can host public domain content but are mostly used for piracy.

Side loading removes the weight of this decision from Apple's shoulders.

@yury_mol @DavidAnson I think the important distinction is that the illegal act is distributing the copy of the game, and that doesn’t happen in Delta. Legally that’s big, and agreed that means Apple’s not on the hook for how people use their software.
