I enjoy seeing the Slack workaround of people changing their handle to indicate when they are OOO. Even though Slack has first-class support for indicating status, people still find the handle rename a useful way to transmit this info.
@grimalkina I do appreciate how Slack decoupled your handle from your identity, so you can easily change your handle. Allowing different identities to use the same handle is an… interesting design decision.
@norootcause@grimalkina I started to give Slack the benefit of the doubt here but the more I think about it the more it just seems silly. IRC handles FTW.
I personally pay close attention to away status and status icons in Slack. And I make sure to let others know that I do, as well as let them know how I respond to Slack messages.
I think a problem here is in the way people communicate in an ambiguous situation. Slack could do a lot better with helping people share their working expectations like I do. I have been in too many different companies over the past six years and "how we use chat" is NEVER an onboarding item.

@sebhans@dtauvdiodr@norootcause we have "how we use slack and why this works for us and what are tradeoffs and how we can dialogue about our expectations here together" as an onboarding item on my team 😏 we even talk about differential weighting and prioritization of different channels. that's what you get with a team of psychologists.
