I hate HomePods so much at this point. Playing music in my living room and it's a bit too loud. I want Siri to reduce the volume and it cries about a missing internet connection.

  1. How can you play Music without Internet?
  2. Why the fuck does this shit pile of overpriced tech need an internet connection to reduce the volume?

@kaiserkiwi I have an Anker Soundcore that does the job with no frills, just Bluetooth and an aux port. Everything worthwhile is a button on the device.
But I guess if you are looking for an assistant it is a bit more difficult to find something that isn't an IOT device :blobfoxpleading:

@plasmawiz Sonos might be the answer. I just "need" to control the media. Everything else is automatable via Home Assistant. The HomePods sadly aren't.

Thinking about selling all s and try again. 😅 Should be easily integratable into and the Voice Assistant runs locally.

Okay Apple also claims that Siri runs locally and definitely doesn't. So I would have to try.

@kaiserkiwi I have my frustrations with Sonos, it's not perfect but Home Assistant has made it a lot better.

Sonos Voice does run locally, but it doesn't support all music providers. It sadly can't interact with HA, but maybe one day?

The HA Sonos card is very good, and the Sonos Cloud integration makes announcing things on speakers super easy and seamless.

I always had issues using Sonos from Linux or my Android phone since I can't do Airplay. HA, PlexAmp and Tidal have made this doable

@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@motoridersd Thanks for your insights.

I use Apple Music as my main music service. But I have the need to use YouTube Music in one Automation and this is where the HomePods fail.

Is it possible to play a YouTube Music Playlist on repeat via Home Assistant automations?

motoridersd,
@motoridersd@pug.ninja avatar

@kaiserkiwi so YouTube Music doesn't integrate with HA (unless it does now? I thought the authentication was a mess, so I haven't tried).

The Sonos integration can access favorites, so if you can favorite any playlist on the Sonos app from YT, then you can play it from HA.

This is the Sonos card. I have Tidal and YT Music added on Sonos. The Supermix favorite is YT, the others are Tidal.

@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@motoridersd Well I guess this answers my question and it seems possible. Maxbe I just should try it. 🤔

motoridersd,
@motoridersd@pug.ninja avatar

@kaiserkiwi if you can buy one to test that you can return if it doesn't work, would be worth trying! :P

kaiserkiwi,
@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@motoridersd This was my thought. Thank you for your help. Search engines are so useless to answer basic questions like this so this was a big service!

motoridersd,
@motoridersd@pug.ninja avatar

@kaiserkiwi ugh, yes the state of search is so unfortunate. The HA Community forums have this infor most likely, but finding it is such a hassle..

You're very welcome! If you have any other questions let me know, I'm happy to test things too

@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@motoridersd Thank you! I just ordered the Era 100 so I probably can answer those questions myself soon. But I'm quite impatient when I expect new tech so maybe one or two questions will get through. 😁

@motoridersd@pug.ninja avatar

@kaiserkiwi 😂 I know the feeling!!

I really hope Sonos opens up their local voice assistant to Home Assistant, that would be so perfect.

We use Alexa on one Sonos speaker to trigger our Good Night scene, but I'd rather not have her enabled at all

kaiserkiwi,
@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@motoridersd We just have a button that activates the scene. After a few years with Siri I want to use voice assistants as little as possible. 😅

kaiserkiwi,
@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

Well. The Era 100 just arrived yesterday. It took me about 20 Minutes to figure stuff out and my "Toddler sleeps" automation finally runs completely with #HomeAssistant without any hacks.

I guess, every time a #HomePod annoys me, I just buy another #Sonos now, sell the HomePods and move on.

The way HomePods work these days, this should take about 40 Minutes. 😅

But seriously. I wish that my previous experience with Sonos wasn't that bad. The I would've probably tested this out months ago.

Thanks to @motoridersd for testing my use case in Home Assistant before buying Sonos again. That made it much easier for me.

FelixDrsm,
@FelixDrsm@mastodon.social avatar

@kaiserkiwi what is your Toddler sleeps automation? Also do you have TTS Running?

kaiserkiwi,
@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@FelixDrsm Some things that happen immediately and some things that change when it's active.

Immediately:

  • If sun is already down: Activate night light
  • Start the sleep playlist
  • Send a notification to my wife an me that the child sleeps
  • If one of the work desks in our home office is active: Let one light blink red additionally as a warning.

Based on the active state:

  • When the sun goes down: Activate night light with a 60 seconds transition
  • When the robot vaccum starts, activate the quietest mode
  • When the threshold to auto clean the robot vaccum is reached, it skips this time
  • If not night time: send a notification after 3 hours to inform us that they should wake up from their nap
  • If 7am on week days: Send notification to wake up from sleep

And probably some things I forgot. But that's what is currently done. 😅

For TTS: Not tested yet.

@kaiserkiwi I've really enjoyed having sonos in the recent past, I suppose they've gotten even better. :D

They used to sound great but they were quite limited in function, I'm glad it works well for you now.

motoridersd,
@motoridersd@pug.ninja avatar

@kaiserkiwi oh yay! Glad it worked out. Sonos has annoyed me in the past, a lot, but Home Assistant has made the experience so much better. Now I don't get as annoyed with them.

Hope the experience continues to be good for you!

kaiserkiwi,
@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@motoridersd If they don't intend to ship S3 suddenly I guess I'll be fine. 😁

The last time I had Sonos Speakers already and then S2 dropped. Before everything was fine. After S2 everything was terrible.

But tge Era 100 speakers are S2 products, so it should be fine, right?
