We're having an internal discussion in @SocialCoop at the moment about whether to disable images and replace them with alt text for World Accessibility day, as per this post:https://social.coop/@stefan@stefanbohacek.online/112275638101628439. The outcome seems to be leaning to no for technical reasons, but I've been fascinated to see how many are giving the suggestion that it's performative as a reason to disagree.

@afewbugs @SocialCoop In disability circles we have a saying, "nothing about us without us". Have any blind or visually impaired users asked for this?

@agvbergin @SocialCoop some blind people weighed in on the discussion here https://social.coop/@dynamic/112349215483683893

@afewbugs @agvbergin @SocialCoop Also here https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/112254528465665844 and here https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/112275637561897034.

And I also reached out to one blind person who I'm a mutual with on here privately who likes and supports the idea.

Now, "nothing about us without us" makes a lot of sense on surface, but maybe I'm just not interpreting this right.

As an ally, my primary role should be lifting up people who are directly affected. That makes sense, I couldn't agree more, and I do that whenever I can.

@afewbugs @agvbergin @SocialCoop The idea to disable images on a server level was originally my idea, specifically to address the 5% of people responding to an informal poll I posted here:

https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/111363818962489179

saying that it's simply "not important" to describe images, by actually showing them what that experience looks like, having to rely on image descriptions, which is a known problem that does need to be addressed, see @AltTextHealthCheck.

@afewbugs @agvbergin @SocialCoop And I'm not sure now if the issue here is that blind people didn't come up with this specific idea (true, but perhaps irrelevant, if there is enough direct support?), or didn't approve of it (not true, see responses above), but perhaps you're looking for a specific type of approval, or a certain number and/or ratio of approvers? Or specific people need to approve?

@afewbugs @agvbergin @SocialCoop Or that, after garnering some/enough support, I am not handing over the leadership to someone from the blind community?

Which I'd be happy to, I just didn't really feel comfortable telling blind people: here, you do this now, I'm out.

@stefan @afewbugs @SocialCoop For me this is about whose priorities are being attended too, because time and resources are always limited.

Anyway, I appreciate you've done a bunch of work on many associated things.

@agvbergin @afewbugs @SocialCoop That makes sense.

And I appreciate your feedback and helping me be a better ally!
