I'm not sure where i have found this post ( @Xenograg @kyonshi probably among link in some of your finds ) but I feel like I'm reinventing the wheel TEN YEARS after this idea came up to blogosphere. If that's not the perfect example of OSR perpetual archeology then I don't know what is.

Because my OSRish alignments/gods have their saints and aspects and stuff. And all of them may be (probably are) in conflict.

@vdonnut @Xenograg I am trying to figure out my own fantasy religion, but my tenets so far are 1. No alignments 2. Worship of most gods is part of a universal church structure, with single gods and saints having their dedicated temples 3. A few gods are inside this structure but are only supposed to be placated and not venerated (not that that keeps heretics from doing that) 4. Pagans refuse to accept the primacy of doctrine

@vdonnut @Xenograg the point is that it's supposed to give a church structure like in the middle ages, but also allow for a polytheist worship of gods

@kyonshi @vdonnut IMO, those are incompatible. I am still trying to figure out what that means for my games. YMMV.

@Xenograg @vdonnut I don't think so. People in general underestimate just how splintered and diverse the Christian church was during the middle ages

Edit: I think specifically saints might sometimes have been renamed gods of pre-christian belief (there's the debate about St. Brigid for example). Also there's a bit of church criticism from my side of course: does it really matter what the churches' doctrine actually was? Its not like they spread that doctrine. They held their masses in Latin.

@Xenograg @vdonnut arguably for the longest time only a chosen few were actually allowed knowledge what the church doctrine was (I.e. the ones that spoke latin)

@kyonshi @vdonnut I seek to role-play a polytheism where priests are concerned with rites. They can also do/be other things, but religion is...simple(r).

@kyonshi @Xenograg I like to think of the Ubergods (Cosmic Forces) as Alignments. So in my draft there is Nature - it is an "alignment" with a bunch of Gods and Aspects people revere. There is Mother Earth, Niren the Fire Lord, the World Tree and so on. All of them are gods/aspects of Nature alignment with conflicting agendas.

Similar thing with Holy Order (alignment) and gods/saints. And only Undeath alignment gets to have no aspects. Because Undeath is one and only.
