feb,

Hi @mike
All Flipboard accounts pretend to be "groups". This is a problem with projects that support real groups. Are you aware of this?

@feb Flipboard accounts that are individual users are federated as normal accounts. Flipboard magazines are federated as groups because they often have more than one contributor and some have many. Check out my Leica Owners Magazine as an example.

I agree though that the way they display in mastodon could be better. Would love any suggestions you have.

feb,

@mike In this case, I'm writing to you from Friendica. There have been groups here since 201x.
Groups are used for thematic exchange but not for grouping pure broadcasters.
Posts are shared within the group members. And groups are not displayed as normal accounts. This will be no different with Lemmy, Kbin and other platforms that use group functions.

@feb yes I’m familiar with friendica groups and really like how they work. Flipboard magazines like @leica or @the are also thematic exchanges between people in a group. They can be private or they can be public to enable non-members to follow the things members are posting. This is an important type of group that people really appreciate. It’s also a form of moderation because the group owner can invite whomever they trust to contribute to the group while not sealing it off from the rest of the world.

But let’s come back to your concern so I can understand it better. What specifically is the problem you are pointing out here? Or what specific change do you have in mind that I should consider. If there’s a better approach to this I’m all ears. The last thing I would want to do is make using friendica harder or more confusing.

feb,

@mike When it comes to groups that deal with exchanges between different groups, there is no problem. There is the group specification that you use for this.

Using @tagesspiegel@flipboard.com as an example, you can see that this account does not behave like a normal account. Instead, it is a "group" type account.
It looks like all accounts below @Tagesspiegel behave like group accounts. I suspect that this is an attempt to combine different accounts into one root account. But that's not what this type is for.

Why don't you create your own account on a platform that has group functions and observe the behaviour for yourself? I can't describe it in a few words.

Since Mastodon does not support the "group" account type (like many other functions that are standard in the Fediverse), it would be an advantage if you would take the different platforms into account when implementing further functions on Flipboard. In this way, further inconsistencies can be avoided.

@feb @Tagesspiegel @tagesspiegel Thanks a lot for this helpful summary. I will do exactly as you suggest and play around with this more to see how we should best federate our groups.
