KayJanes, This afternoon's walk ...
Photo of a fragrant fringecup. "Tuft of heart-shaped leaves, upright stem. Plant slightly hairy throughout. Leaves 2–3 in. wide, with shallow lobes, sharp teeth; stem leaves become smaller and clasp stem. Flower spike 1-sided, with many flowers. Flower in a deep cup with deeply fringed petals opened flat, white lightly tinted with green or sometimes red, very fragrant. Grows in moist forests, along streams, below treeline."
Photo of the middle portion of our neighborhood trail, which is the last remaining fragment of an abandoned housing development after unstable soils were discovered. The paved area has lifted spots caused by the mighty mighty tree roots leaving their impression upon the pavement. They remind me of what it might look like if we could see the underground work of moles.
And another photo of the trail without the pavement, meandering between deciduous and evergreen trees in the dappled sunlight and many native and invasive species crowding the path
