I'll be talking digital driver's licences on ABC Radio Victoria around 9:05 this morning -- tune in!

@alexkidman Could you discuss that licenses should not necessarily display specific PII in all scenarios?

When you have to show licenses to register at motels and such so they can ID you later, they should not get your full license number. They should get just enough info so that LE can find you.

Perhaps partially obscure license number, DOB and address?

@markd Will do if I can (and this appears to be part of the Victorian implementation, FWIW).

@markd Didn't come up in discussion (apologies, nature of doing radio and being interviewed) but appears to be implemented with some obfuscation built in: "There are 3 levels of info that you can share with your digital driver licence:

Full licence: This view shows info about your right to drive. You can share this view when you need to show police things like licence status, classes, or restrictions.
Identity: This shows your basic ID info — name, address, and signature.
Proof of age: This view shows that you’re over 18. It won’t show your exact age or date of birth."

The old saying about not putting all of your eggs in the one basket springs to mind ...

One trip and ...

@MyView Hmm. Physical Licences aren't going anywhere -- in your scenario, this is pretty much a spare basket of eggs. Or at least one additional egg.

@alexkidman

Yeah but ... as a wise man one said ... "if you can gain access to an online system, then somebody else can" :)

And the inconvenience if one loses, breaks or has phone stolen, would be horrendous.

I found a woman's phone on a footpath once and it had everything else in the same wallet, licence, medicare, credit cards ...

But to each his own :)

@MyView But your licence details are already on an online system (this would be how the police check it). It'd arguably be worse to lose your wallet -- a new phone can be purchased and you could get back a digital verified copy of a licence quite quickly compared to having a new one printed.

@alexkidman

" It'd arguably be worse to lose your wallet "

From what I have seen on many women ... the phone is in the wallet (as was the one I found), so all goes at once ...

And ...

"a new phone can be purchased "

Not necessarily ... some people rely on hand-me-downs and with the 'cost of living' ...

But then I am of the old 'Be Prepared' brigade :)

So I repeat ... to each his own.
