Wrote a tiny twitter thread on what could edtech be like which was in response to an article on "If bell hooks Made an LMS" by Jesse Stommel

https://www.jessestommel.com/if-bell-hooks-made-an-lms-grades-radical-openness-and-domain-of-ones-own/

My key argument of online learning is that it removes the need to compete to access edu because of "limitation of seats"

The author argues LMSes can feel very mechanical and I agree, although even in physical classrooms, the teaching and assessment processes can feel very mechanical.

Wrote about my reflection on my engineering college days

Edtech isn't the problem, edtech that simply is a digital version of the pedagogy used for "teaching to the test"/ exam oriented education is the problem.

The biggest advantage of online learning is it removes the need to compete with other people in order to get an education.

The ability to use an object/service by millions at the same time, like simultaneously without having to compete with each other

That it affords/creates transient, temporary spaces for billions of people to inhabit, use at the same time without one needing to compete with another to use it is kinda marvellous

"One of the problems with learning management systems is that they make students (and their experiences) interchangeable. And they do the same to teachers"

Very valid critique, but I'd argue instead of throwing out the whole idea of online learning because of existing edtech designs that feel impersonal, the focus can be on how can we use the greater access online platforms provide but then design them in a way that doesn't feel mechanical

i.e how to bring in more flexibility and autonomy for both teachers and students via online platforms, one that enables customization and personalization of learning paths.

Tools for learners to personalize their learning experience, including adjusting the interface, choosing content, and setting their own goals.

To enable learners to choose different modules or paths based on their interests, pace, and preferred learning styles.

A system that supports non-linear learning paths, giving learners the freedom to explore topics in a way that suits their understanding and preferences, that supports open-ended exploration and inquiry

Features that are responsive to student and teacher's needs and support iterating curriculum's design, incorporating new knowledge and emerging fields.

Maybe even features for co-creation and modification of course content to ensure relevance and engagement.

impactology,

Features for instructors to reflect on their teaching practices and adapt based on student feedback.

In conclusion

Build a responsive platform for online learning for open ended exploration and inquiry, that counters the feeling of mechanization and lack of agency by affording customization, flexibility, iterability, co-creation both for the student and teacher.
