Well the actual fix for this turned out to be almost comically simple: calling res.truncated_body when fetching the preview card instead of res.body_with_limit, but hey it got accepted and merged. My code is now in Mastodon and a lot of our preview card issues should be fixed in the next release! :flower:
A note just for users of https://BNE.Social we've implemented this small patch on the server ahead of the next release so you should notice preview card images behaving better for sites like Wired and The New Yorker etc. Unfortunately it doesn't fix all sites (cough The Guardian) but it's a step in the right direction.
