Power users cared about 3p apps, the average redditor probably didn’t even know they existed. It was never going to “succeed” if success was that Reddit backtracked from their position. It would have made spez look too weak. I think it did cost them a lot more than they suggested in the short term, and I think it’ll cost them more in the long run too. Lemmy is going to become a real competitor. And it probably never would have previously.
