What are people using for #SoundCloud alternatives? I don't need distro or anything else, just a place to host audio where people can easily stream it. I'm game to host my own, if setting it up isn't a huge pain.
More and more I'm finding SC to be a magnet for spammers and scammers, and I'm looking for an out.
@synkr3tyk for just hosting and streaming of course I'm going to recommend #Faircamp... But not sure if there are other features of SoundCloud that you'd be looking for?
@ddlyh@synkr3tyk Faircamp is a heck of a lot easier to set up and maintain than funkwhale though, if streaming is all that's required. Depends if the extra functionality is worth the effort
@keefmarshall@ddlyh The Faircamp sites I’ve checked so far have a major downside: Streaming doesn’t seem to work in Firefox on Mac. (Worked just fine in Chrome, but I’m trying to avoid Chrome.)
@keefmarshall Okay, so, I was wrong: I had one add-on activated. It was the Google Analytics Opt-Out Add-On (by Google). Deactivating it allows Faircamp streaming to work. It doesn’t seem to cause this problem with any other streaming website (Funkwhale sites work, jam.coop is happy, &c).
Anyway, I have a fix now. I’m kind of on the static site generator train anyway with my Pelican blog, so I’m leaning toward Faircamp.
@freebliss@keefmarshall While we're chatting about such weighty matters... I shared a suggestion about RSS feed generation at https://codeberg.org/simonrepp/faircamp/issues/75 - I think it might meet your criteria of ease and simplicity, while enhancing the usability of both the site and the feed.
@synkr3tyk Thanks for the iniative and offer to implement! I've thought about this quite a bit today, also in context of possible implications and connected questions/issues, but at this point I'm rather leaning towards not adding it. At its core (leaving out an essay on the implications, connected questions etc.) I feel it adds a bit of complexity to solve an issue that I could potentially see being solved by shifting, or taking away complexity elsewhere instead, so consequently that's what I would like to try first. Given it's connected to a dozen of other things and days are packed, I'll get back to it soon but it will take a bit. I'll post an update in the issue then! In any case, much appreciate the input because your issue does point at a few things around the catalog text that need attention, and it was good to be reminded/poked, thanks! :)
