Pronounced "syncretic". I play & teach modular synth, & tinker with number theory, among other things. US-based. Ditching my 30yr software career to go to grad school for mathematics.

Okay, it's time. Time to change servers. Time to have local & federated timelines that don't make my eyes bleed. Time to support an indie effort.

Does anyone want to share about their server? My main interests are #Music - I play #Eurorack #Synth, #Guitar, #ChapmanStick, and software, with varying degrees of skill - and #Mathematics - I'm attempting to get into grad school for #Math to facilitate a career change. I'm also liberal af, if that matters one way or the other on your server.

After just more than two months in the new house, I'm finally in the home stretch of setting up my living/working space the way I want it. Still haven't done much/any decorating, but the functional pieces are nearly all in place (just ordered the last two pieces of furniture/storage/organization I'll need for at least a while).

That might seem like a long time to some of y'all, but I think it's the fastest I've ever been set up ๐Ÿซ ...

Hey Mastodon - I'm doing a little "research" for my upcoming talk with @DeepDishSwift.

What's some "one line" advice you that resonates with you? Stuff like "do what you love" or "hustle!" or "don't love a your job; it won't love you back" -- what are the one liners that have really suck with you when it comes to work, life, love etc?

@sommer @DeepDishSwift This is more about programming than life, but: Make invalid states unrepresentable.

I swear, we are still talking about this platform stuff all wrong. There is absolutely no comparison between my mastodon engagements and those anywhere else. People here are just far more interested in engaging people and ideas than any other site where the biggest activity seems to be following celebrity accounts and popular influencers discussing very little. Itโ€™s a completely different kind of experience.

synkr3tyk,
@synkr3tyk@mastodon.social avatar

@shoq 100% this. Most of my output from my rare visits to Threads in the past few months has been words to the effect of, "WOW but this place is a toxic cesspit. I'll be over on Mastodon if you need me."

Anyone using a base model (8 gb ram, 256mb SSD) for music production, specifically Ableton Live? Internet says it is up to the task but I'd rather hear it from someone directly.

My almost ten-year-old PC is dying and I hope to revive it but as plan B, I see that the Mac Mini is on sale for $499 right now and I'm pretty sure any PC I bought for that much would be considerably less potent as a music production PC. (You can also convince me I'm wrong about that if you are inclined.)

synkr3tyk,
@synkr3tyk@mastodon.social avatar

@etherdiver I am able to run VCV and Ableton Lite on my 2019 MacBook Air (Intel CPU, not the new chip) without trouble, as long as I don't have too much else going on (like Firefox with my standard 200 open tabs). It has 16 GB of RAM, though, and I don't know the degree to which your experience will be different with half the RAM and an 8x faster CPU.

Check the return policy - you could always get the thing, see how it performs under fire, and bring it back if it falls short.

    The truth is - while some artists will find a way to produce great work using AI, most of the output is and will continue to be superficial at best and soulless at worst. That doesnโ€™t mean all AI art is bad. But it does mean your AI art probably is.

    The trailer for the new Avatar: The Last Airbender show looks decent, but even if the show turns out to be a faithful recreation of the original I'm not sure what for? The original is already perfect. It's still there. Why does it have to be recreated again?

    synkr3tyk,
    @synkr3tyk@mastodon.social avatar

    @Gargron Because viewers will generally tolerate or enjoy the familiar, and the people who bankroll new shows are generally too cowardly to bet on new stories

    Pixelfed was forked, I joined their discord and gave them a piece of my mind

    Forks fucking rule, I'm happy to see this. Open source is crucial to the fediverse, and while we all might not agree on everything, it feels amazing to desire to work with forks

    Y'all are the real winners, even more so when devs like me do the unthinkable and bring awareness to forks

    synkr3tyk,
    @synkr3tyk@mastodon.social avatar

    @dansup This is great to see. There's a small open source project I was thinking of forking, and I've been worried about the community response. You've given me a little cause for optimism.

    I'm sure it's because I'm only using it half-correctly, but wow is the Ableton piano roll a PITA. (This would probably be easier if I could trust my timing on a keyboard well enough to just record the MIDI and quantize.)

    What are people using for alternatives? I don't need distro or anything else, just a place to host audio where people can easily stream it. I'm game to host my own, if setting it up isn't a huge pain.

    More and more I'm finding SC to be a magnet for spammers and scammers, and I'm looking for an out.

    synkr3tyk,
    @synkr3tyk@mastodon.social avatar

    @keefmarshall Okay, so, I was wrong: I had one add-on activated. It was the Google Analytics Opt-Out Add-On (by Google). Deactivating it allows Faircamp streaming to work. It doesnโ€™t seem to cause this problem with any other streaming website (Funkwhale sites work, jam.coop is happy, &c).

    Anyway, I have a fix now. Iโ€™m kind of on the static site generator train anyway with my Pelican blog, so Iโ€™m leaning toward Faircamp.

    @freebliss @keefmarshall While we're chatting about such weighty matters... I shared a suggestion about RSS feed generation at https://codeberg.org/simonrepp/faircamp/issues/75 - I think it might meet your criteria of ease and simplicity, while enhancing the usability of both the site and the feed.
