apparently switched on (not just offered—switched on) on all cars this month, apparently to goose their numbers.

“I’ve rarely been so frightened behind the wheel of my own car. As an experience it ranks right up there with driving that one stretch of the 880 where you’re supposed to go at 45mph and everybody drives twice that, the time I was riding in a Lyft and was jackknifed by a tow truck, or that one time I was driving on the 101 North and a tech bro Lamborghini shot out of the Highway 12 offramp and came within two inches of hitting me, spun around in the road, and careened off into the distance.”

“So would I pay the money for it? Fear on this level seems like a pretty poor use of $12,000 or $199 a month. You can rent a horror movie for $2.99, and paying attention to America is free.”

@drahardja @ben As the company gets more desperate to monetize FSD with a customer base which are only in the market for the most affordable model it will increase the risks taken with this technology. I would not trust it one bit. These dynamics are not working in the favor of public safety.

I am surprised the promise of FSD being ready “next year” for almost a decade has been allowed to continue.

@ben Update: I’ve received several reports of any one of these cases occurring:

  1. FSD is turned on, automatically.
  2. FSD is offered, but user must click through consent pages.
  3. FSD is not offered.

I think 3. is a consequence of gradual rollout of the feature enablement. I suspect everyone will get it (where eligible) eventually.

I wonder if 1 and 2 are a consequence of either the car initially registered to a state that requires consent, or the user having agreed to some other agreement that legally includes FSD.

One thing is clear though: Tesla is desperate to goose up the usage numbers of FSD. The system is just not that great outside of very specific use cases, and their usage numbers have been declining of late.

@drahardja @ben To be clear, you always have to "turn it on" which is not the same thing as having the feature enabled.

Engaging FSD requires either a single or a double-tap of the stalk. It disengages if you override the steering, brake, take your hand off the wheel for too long or keep your eyes down and ignore attention warnings. Do that too many times and you get locked out.

I'm pointing that out because accidental engagement will get disengaged almost immediately just by driving.

@jeff @ben I think the issue is that it’s the same motion as enabling Autopilot (correct me if I’m wrong). The driver may not be aware that the car is now in FSD mode when it was only in Autopilot the day before.

@drahardja @ben I get it. It’s a valid concern. But either mode has the same constraints. Hands on wheel, nothing bad happens.

I have no firsthand information on whether FSD is available without turning it on with this free trial. I’ve had to turn it on and accept warnings and data collection in the past.

I feel it ought to force you to sit through an introductory video explaining its limits.

@jeff @ben Yeah I’ve heard personal reports of both: automatically enabled, and clickthrough before enabling.

No videos though! 😄

Question for you @ben: Are you sure you didn’t have to click through some clickwrap legalese to activate FSD? Friends of mine have similarly had the “free FSD” enabled, but they had to consent to additional personal data collection before the feature was enabled.
