I’ve started to think of police unions as sort of small paramilitary occupational juntas. Being supported by the military through the 1033 program, they have access to military hardware. Being wealthy and influential, they exert strong political sway over the local government. They kill whomever they wish, and the city foots the bill for the legal cost.
They really do resemble violent colonial occupiers in every sense that matters. Foucault’s boomerang is real.
