stopfinator, in ThinkPad T480s – What is this port?

In a bold attempt to force people to switch to new docking stations and hence abandon the old ones (where you docked the notebook via a proprietary port on the bottom of the machine), the “new” generation of docking stations had kind of a lever that was pushed into this abomination of a usb-c/thunderbolt slot. When we rolled out these new docks quite some users got confused, as you still “click” in the notebook into the new dock, but additionally have to push in this kind of new “lever”. Also, users got confused where to plug in the usb-c cable when not using the new dock 😬

Hello, fellow Keychron user

a_seattle_ian,

I wonder if the noise is too much for a library?

levi,

Nah they’re gateron reds, not noisy at all.

RickRussell_CA,
@RickRussell_CA@lemmy.world avatar

Although the Keychron keyboards with Gateron reds are still a LOT louder than a membrane keyboard, like a Microsoft 600 or something.

I mean, I love my Keychrons, but if silence was a priority you’d really want a keyboard designed for low noise.

levi,

Silence is not really a priority, I just don’t want to be obnoxiously loud.

There’s signs up in this library saying that it’s not a quiet area, noise is ok and expected. There are people on the phone / video calls et cetera.

sopo, in X1 yoga or x280?

Nobody answered yet so I’ll try :D

Grab whatever best deal you’ll find, because prices on the used market, especially for 5+year old devices, don’t always follow a logic. So make sure to look out for the X390, X13, L13 yoga, etc, as well. Newer but they might be cheaper!

Personally I never bought Yogas so cant comment on that vs regular thinkpad. I had a touch T480 but the display was too dim to use outside (so I put a bright 1440p panel on it).

I have a gen 6, it’s pretty good on popos, but it’s not outstanding. However, it’s an older machine. Same specs. Keen to follow this to see if any good suggestions appear. Best of luck. Lovely hardware. Best keyboard I’ve ever used.

Evv1L, in Backlit not working on L440
@Evv1L@mastodon.ml avatar

@awesome_guy does keyboard has any logo on the left side of Space key? If no then keyboard is not backlit.

Does keyboard backlit works in UEFI? It should.

Also remove your keyboard using Hardware Maintenance Manual for L440 and look for backlit cable, it could be damaged or poorly connected.

awesome_guy,

Shop owner is saying that the key was probably replaced and has backlit logo on it and the laptop doesn’t have backlit. I am not entirely sure that his statement is right or wrong. Could it be the case that some L440 have backlit and some doesn’t i.e. 2 variants of this tinkpad?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble,

psref.lenovo.com/…/ThinkPad_L440_Spec.PDF

PSREF implies that no L440 should have a backlit keyboard. Which makes sense the L series are the cheap models so I’d expect them to not have it. Especially since the *40 was one of the first series to even offer backlit keyboard.

T440 for example says:

Keyboard UltraNav 6-row, spill-resistant, multimedia Fn keys, optional LED backlight

awesome_guy,

Thanks buddy!

Dudewitbow, in Opinions on the new ThinkPad P1 Gen 7?

i like that the LP camm form factor is being used. its a matter if the other 2 major business ones (dell(will probably use it given its their design), and hp to see of it takes off.)

LPCAMM2 memory is very exciting

solrize, in Opinions on the new ThinkPad P1 Gen 7?

I am staying with low-ish powered laptops and offloading heavy computation to remote servers. It helps that I don’t do much graphics or gaming though.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble,

I already kinda do this with my current machine. When I get to work I plug the P1 into my dock and it stays there until I go home. If I need to access my computer from elsewhere I have a second laptop that I use to remote into the P1 to do stuff. My only qualm is my light laptop (T14s gen 2) doesn’t do dual 4k displays at 60hz with my dock. Also remote desktop always just kinda sucks compared to actually being at the computer.

And I like the good GPU for the few times a year I’m traveling and want to play a game. I just wish they’d make an AMD version of this laptop that’s actually capable of battery life. I’ve gotten as bad as less than 30 minutes of charge on this device.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble, in Opinions on the new ThinkPad P1 Gen 7?

I have a P1 gen 4 and I’m looking to upgrade, but the gen 7 is kind of a downgrade in many ways over the gen 6. The GPU is capped at the 4070 while the gen 6 went up to the 4090 mobile. Overall it’s a smaller footprint, and the cooling solution appears to be smaller so it’s probably not going to perform as well as the outgoing model.

I’m also not necessarily looking forward to the aluminum chassis, and really don’t like the notch. If it had Thunderbolt 5 I’d probably get it, but for now I’ll hold off until gen 8? This 11th gen CPU is awful and I can’t wait to get rid of it.

Grntrenchman, in Any recommendations on what to do with this mini-PCIe slot in my x200s?

Perfect size for a Coral Edge TPU. do some tensorflow stuff on device…

Evil_Shrubbery, in Any recommendations on what to do with this mini-PCIe slot in my x200s?

An RGB card. Then cover it up.

pastermil, in Any recommendations on what to do with this mini-PCIe slot in my x200s?

How about a Turbo Memory card? The support on Windows seems terrible, but under Linux, it would show up as superfast 1GB or 2GB flash drive.

I haven’t tried it myself, but I am (loosely) planing to.

Jumuta,

how fast is a turbo memory card? Is it daster than modern ssds in a mpcie adaptor?

pastermil,

Not sure about the exact speed, but it’s a NAND on a PCIE x1

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I was looking at that myself. Some ThinkPad forum posts seem to suggest it only helps if you don’t have an SSD.

If it actually functions as a secondary drive that’s incredibly fast that would be a neat novelty.

pastermil,

I’ve seen something similar. What I gotten from that is the fact above only applies when you’re using it as an accelerator (as intended).

Yes, it would function as a drive, at least under Linux.

Once again, I haven’t actually used this thing…
