In a bold attempt to force people to switch to new docking stations and hence abandon the old ones (where you docked the notebook via a proprietary port on the bottom of the machine), the “new” generation of docking stations had kind of a lever that was pushed into this abomination of a usb-c/thunderbolt slot. When we rolled out these new docks quite some users got confused, as you still “click” in the notebook into the new dock, but additionally have to push in this kind of new “lever”. Also, users got confused where to plug in the usb-c cable when not using the new dock 😬
Grab whatever best deal you’ll find, because prices on the used market, especially for 5+year old devices, don’t always follow a logic. So make sure to look out for the X390, X13, L13 yoga, etc, as well. Newer but they might be cheaper!
Personally I never bought Yogas so cant comment on that vs regular thinkpad. I had a touch T480 but the display was too dim to use outside (so I put a bright 1440p panel on it).
I have a gen 6, it’s pretty good on popos, but it’s not outstanding. However, it’s an older machine. Same specs. Keen to follow this to see if any good suggestions appear. Best of luck. Lovely hardware. Best keyboard I’ve ever used.
Shop owner is saying that the key was probably replaced and has backlit logo on it and the laptop doesn’t have backlit. I am not entirely sure that his statement is right or wrong. Could it be the case that some L440 have backlit and some doesn’t i.e. 2 variants of this tinkpad?
PSREF implies that no L440 should have a backlit keyboard. Which makes sense the L series are the cheap models so I’d expect them to not have it. Especially since the *40 was one of the first series to even offer backlit keyboard.
T440 for example says:
Keyboard UltraNav 6-row, spill-resistant, multimedia Fn keys, optional LED backlight
i like that the LP camm form factor is being used. its a matter if the other 2 major business ones (dell(will probably use it given its their design), and hp to see of it takes off.)
I already kinda do this with my current machine. When I get to work I plug the P1 into my dock and it stays there until I go home. If I need to access my computer from elsewhere I have a second laptop that I use to remote into the P1 to do stuff. My only qualm is my light laptop (T14s gen 2) doesn’t do dual 4k displays at 60hz with my dock. Also remote desktop always just kinda sucks compared to actually being at the computer.
And I like the good GPU for the few times a year I’m traveling and want to play a game. I just wish they’d make an AMD version of this laptop that’s actually capable of battery life. I’ve gotten as bad as less than 30 minutes of charge on this device.
I have a P1 gen 4 and I’m looking to upgrade, but the gen 7 is kind of a downgrade in many ways over the gen 6. The GPU is capped at the 4070 while the gen 6 went up to the 4090 mobile. Overall it’s a smaller footprint, and the cooling solution appears to be smaller so it’s probably not going to perform as well as the outgoing model.
I’m also not necessarily looking forward to the aluminum chassis, and really don’t like the notch. If it had Thunderbolt 5 I’d probably get it, but for now I’ll hold off until gen 8? This 11th gen CPU is awful and I can’t wait to get rid of it.
