In 15 years of trying to prolong my bikes' drivetrains by cleaning them I have still never understood the conundrum that if you degrease a chain you then need to wash the degreaser off with water, and if you then apply lubricant to that chain you are surely trapping water in the links?

@corin_ja I started using paraffin for lube, produces a lot less mess down the line, and the temperature evaporates water anyway.

@mariusor so is that like wax? I use a water-based wax called Squirt on one of my bikes, which doesn't require degreasing and relubing, and it's good. I've heard good things about the proper hot wax treatment too

@corin_ja yes, paraffin is wax.

I bought 1Kg of it a couple of years ago for 10EUR and I didn't make a dent in it.

The only problem is that if I take the bike to a mechanic I must insist they don't lube the chain themselves with regular stuff.

@mariusor ah, thanks. Yeah I suggested wax to my (excellent) local bike shop mechanic and he was very skeptical. I guess different mechanics have their own preferences

@corin_ja no reason to be skeptic, the pro peloton uses paraffin and sillicon sprays.

I can't find the original video I used as inspiration, but this GCN one has all the important bits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvJ7aAUWBz8
