I've been skeptical of "free" public transit, but it is hard to argue with these results. The only way this will work is to find new sources for operating funds than the farebox.

@danwentzel I read this as Montpelier, VT and thought what! Vermont as free public transport?! WOW! Then I saw the link, Euro, and realized it was actually probably France lol. Still nice to see though!

#Shimano is so annoying… I’ve been trying to eliminate bottom bracket/crankset clicking on my #gravel #bicycle. In theory it should be easy. BSA, Hollowtech… If there’s even one, microscopic grain of dirt, it’s gonna click and/or rub, no matter what…

I’ve removed crankset, BB, cleaned it, drowned it in lube and assembled it again, torqued to spec. I bet it’s gonna click right away I start my next ride…

kinderstampfer,
@kinderstampfer@mstdn.social avatar

@ssamulczyk finding and eliminating weird noises on the bike is the worst.
I once discovered via pure accident, that the terrible creaking on my old CX bike was actually caused by the very crappy ratchet in the rear wheels hub.

Good luck finding the cause of yours :-)

ssamulczyk,
@ssamulczyk@mstdn.social avatar

@wlukewindsor They are really nice and easy to use. You don’t have to clamp the thing like the normal QR. The lever is built in a way that you can sort of pull it and rotate to a desired position without unscrewing it.

It was hassle free until I started mixing parts. The issues began when I combined Deore right crank with SLX left one. It doesn’t work without extra spacers which puts strain on the bb…😂 Now I’m all slx but I hate the chain line…😵‍💫

StephanieMoore,
@StephanieMoore@mastodon.online avatar

Wondering, from those who or

My general stamina is far better than that of my wrists when I cycle. Any tips or postures you use to help with wrist strain while biking? I could go a lot further if I could reduce wrist strain.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@StephanieMoore My advice would be to use a more upright position (might need new handlebars or a new bike if yours is more "sporty" or aerodynamic). Also try adding suspension, at least on your front fork, and perhaps on your seat post. Those steps made a huge difference for me.

"The way to fight #crime is not with stops based on hunches and pretext, but by investing proactively in communities and with #policing targeted at people for whom there is suspicion of serious criminal conduct.

On the other hand, there is a real #trafficSafety problem in this country… #transportation officials should focus their efforts... better lighting… #protectedBikeLanes & pedestrian crossings; self-ticketing cars with speed limiters, … [#transit]" 🚎 🚲

PedestrianError,
@PedestrianError@towns.gay avatar

@enobacon The other way of looking at DDACTS would be to recognize that where you build stroads (especially when you bulldoze pre-existing neighborhoods to do so), you not only get vehicular violence, you also increase gun, knife, fist… every possible type of violence as well as property crime. You can’t arrest or ticket your way out of bad planning. City planners rather than cops should have been the primary users of this data from the start.

The same truck, now passed to the other side of the still red light.

leeloo,
@leeloo@techhub.social avatar

@Tevis @WhyNotZoidberg
That may be because many places in the US do it backwards. The parking lane should be between the road and the cycle lane. Not the other way around.

Road - parked cars - cycle lane - sidewalk.

WhyNotZoidberg,
@WhyNotZoidberg@topspicy.social avatar

@leeloo @Tevis Over here it is even more common to widen the sidewalk and split it in a walking path and a bike path so the bike lane is up high, away from traffic altogether.

I am taking a today between Kansas City and St. Louis. It's been so long that I can't remember the last time I took an intercity bus. It hasn't changed a bit.
Most notably, it appears to still be true that the people on buses are mostly the people who can't afford to fly.
(Yes, I know, it's a generalization based on appearances. Don't come into my mentions harassing me about it unless you've ridden a Greyhound for several hours and seen it for yourself.)

jik,
@jik@federate.social avatar

It's still a combination of perfectly decent, nice people, rude people, and people who seem to have something not quite right in the head. The latter category continues to seemingly be overrepresented on buses compared to other forms of transit.
Definitely a much higher percentage of BIPOC, especially immigrants, compared to flying.
(One wonders if this is in part due to the fact that undocumented immigrants can't get the ID they would need to fly.)

Frame pump?

I'm in fits and bursts with getting back into biking. I obsessively won't get on a bike w/o the tools to fix a flat. So I carry tube, patch kit, levers, and a pump. And then there's no sense in bringing that w/o bring a few handtools, (allen wrench, multi-screwdriver).

Wow I already typed all that and haven't gotten to my question.

You know that joke in airplane where he says start from the beginning, and the guy is like "well it began with the dinosaurs...".

I’m interested in a lot of transit activism in N America but I swear people would think you’re a total weeb if you talk about transit in places with good transit. Trying to imagine talking to people in Singapore or Hong Kong or Seoul about.. loving trains

I think they would back tf away from me and run away.

Like my friend always says ‘I don’t want to be a transit fan. I just want great transit’

fdr,
@fdr@mas.to avatar

@skinnylatte I thought that Seoul has great potential for utility cycling, but some adaptations will need experimenting with. The reason I thought this is the most efficient way to get around under human power is walking these common and incredibly long blocks with wide 50km/h roads and center dividers. But you could roll them quickly on a cycle, in principle. If we presume the block structure isn’t going anywhere, it seems like a slam dunk. Yet … complications. I may write about it

HumToTable,
@HumToTable@sfba.social avatar

@skinnylatte The rural piece of the transit puzzle in the US is important. There are vast parts of the country where "transit" means getting in your car or truck to drive the miles to town because that's the only option.

LA folks, what’s a good place to wait for 2 hours or so, so that I can easily get to a train or bus at Union Station around 11pm on a Sat night? Like a place with food preferably. Where I can sit with my bags. Play a game on my Switch while waiting. No alcohol, tho I am fine with places with alcohol.

@skinnylatte if you feel like a late dinner, Bestia and Bavel are both nearish in the Arts District, and both open late even on weekdays.

Bestia has great pasta (their bone marrow agnolotti is amazing) and Bavel does amazing things with a wood grill and Middle Eastern flavors. Bavel used to be my go-to spot to bring out of town friends who wanted something semi-fancy. The things they do with vegetables, mmmm.

“Getting to Green”: If you believe is important for cities and people should use it, here’s a way to lend a hand. Help people learn to navigate bus routes and enjoy the ride. Your project could start with a video about reading bus maps, paying on board and good rider etiquette. But once the basics are covered, tell people what they can experience along the way. In Philly, that means highlighting buses that take you to … great city parks. https://billypenn.com/2024/04/25/philly-parks-map-getting-to-green/
