@popey What the... I figured that was a HTTP gzip encoding issue but was thinking "surely 2012 was late enough for inline gzip in Firefox, right?"... But no, that's just what that URL is serving. And file is making no sense of it. And /about itself is serving the same type of garbage but different.
@popey Update: appears to be "content-encoding: br" ("Brotli" which I had not heard of until now), and apparently ubuntu.com/about gives it to you whether you accept-encoding it in your request or not.
