Supporting local businesses by paying more is incredibly stupid

I never understood why it’s looked down upon to purchase goods from online retailers and big department stores, especially if it’s significantly cheaper. Local businesses up charge their goods like crazy to stay afloat, but I’m not a rich man. Why in the world should I pay more from my own pocket to help support your local business?

If you own a bookstore, coffee shop (and sell an $8 cold brew because it’s “organic and home made”), record store, mods suck my cock, clothing store (selling name brands) and you decide to up charge because you need to stay afloat, I am 100% without shame going to find the best price, and if it’s Amazon, then praise Amazon. Your business can go out of business for all I care. Owning a local business for the sake of having a local business when there are department stores and online retailers selling for nearly half of the price you’re selling, that is an incredibly stupid investment.

Bookstores especially are the absolute worst. I’m not paying 39.99 full cover price of the latest Stephen King book at your local business when Amazon is selling it for 18.99.

Quacksalber,

mods suck my cock

Hmmm.

tobogganablaze,

I’m not sure it’s that unpopular. After all the local buisnesses are dying because most people don’t care enough to pay more.

slurp,

Shopping local reduces the harm Amazon can and is doing.

It’s a political decision with regards to consolidation of power. Do you want Bezos and his small group to have such significant power over the direction of both your local region and on a global scale? Their interest is just money, whereas people who live in a region typically care about it beyond that.

All those tax breaks they get? Because they are so big they can bargain at that level. Supporting Amazon takes away from local services as a result.

The way I look at it, shopping with Amazon is often due to laziness (often cheaper or better from elsewhere) and perhaps you get a discount upfront (again, it’s not hard to shop around and find comparable or better prices) but there are hidden long-term costs.

Boomkop3,

The issue is that when small businesses go under, the big stores will have a monopoly on whatever they used to sell. They they can raise the prices to milk every cent out of you.

Cuz what are you going to do? Buy your groceries from China? (extreme example)

Boomkop3,

This is the third time you posted this same thing

minibyte,

Jeff Bezos’ propaganda.

NaibofTabr,
GardenVarietyAnxiety,

It keeps more money flowing through your local economy rather than sending it out to other states or countries.

I have no idea how economics works, but I think the idea is that it’s investing in the local quality of life. That’s debatable, but I wouldn’t call people who do it stupid.

I’d buy local way more often if I could.
