It doesn't really matter if you drive an EV or a gas-guzzling SUV or a weird truck. Cars cause traffic jams. Regardless of their drive train. Less cars is the only solution. Simple.

@jwildeboer HALLELUJAH!

Improving public transport is 10 thousand times better than trying to push everybody into a(n) (electric) car.

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@SuitedUpDev And I didn't even mention how streets occupy public space and force pedestrians to be pushed aside even in the centre parts of big cities, where cars make even less sense.

SuitedUpDev,
@SuitedUpDev@mastodon.online avatar

@jwildeboer Yeah.. it's actually quite ridiculous.

Especially since the roads are built for rush capacity but are only used at that capacity for ~ 1/12th of the day.

eythian,

@jwildeboer
That's not really an unpopular opinion.

lehtimaeki,
@lehtimaeki@snapp.social avatar

@jwildeboer this assumes that "no cars" is a viable solution. I wish it was but feel skeptical about the reality.
If we accept that cars won't be going anywhere, the drivetrain starts to REALLY matter and we should act really quick to make them all electric.

SuitedUpDev,
@SuitedUpDev@mastodon.online avatar

@lehtimaeki As a "car hater" (quotes because I couldn't care less about cars) a completely carless society isn't feasible, there are always gonna be edge cases where cars are desirable.

But I think we should strife for less car dependence, generally less cars on the road and better public transport infrastructure.

lehtimaeki,
@lehtimaeki@snapp.social avatar

@SuitedUpDev 💯
If there was a nation declaring themselves (personal) car free, with a well supported public transit and bicycle alternatives, I'd be tempered to move there.

Cars don't belong in cities, and even outside them, a drastic reduction would be badly needed. With a greatly improved train network, I'm sure we could lure a lot of people out from their metal boxes.

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@SuitedUpDev @lehtimaeki I'm more a "driver hater" because of the way some drivers behave.

Yes. Outside of cities, individual transport will remain in demand. And autonomous EVs will remove the bad drivers from the roads. They will also help reduce individual car ownership too.

SuitedUpDev,
@SuitedUpDev@mastodon.online avatar

@ianp5a yes definitely, outside of the city or think of people like GP's that need to quickly arrive at a patients.

Also, removing bad drivers from the road would already be a 100% improvement over the current situation.

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@lehtimaeki Sure. From an environmental perspective EV are definitely a better alternative to combustion engines running on fossile fuel. But from a bigger environmental perspective they don't solve the underlying problem.

lehtimaeki,
@lehtimaeki@snapp.social avatar

@jwildeboer 💯 I hope I live long enough to see a world with a fraction of cars we have now. It would be a much better place to live.

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@jwildeboer @lehtimaeki I sold my last car several years back. It was soooo great to have one less thing to worry about.
I live in a car sharing part of Munich in case I need a car, paying per minute for one of the share cars nearby, using the money I save with no car maintenance, tax, fuel or insurance costs. But as I cycle everywhere, I've rarely used the sharing service. It's fun to get an EV when I have guests though.

(FTR — I admit that I do own a car. A Smart Roadster. From 2005. That has seen less than a 1000 kilometres of being driven in the 6 years I own it. That's not an excuse. I am old, forgive my love for this beautiful vehicle)

mxk,
@mxk@hachyderm.io avatar

@jwildeboer you might be old, but are you also small enough to comfortably fit in the Smart Roadster?
Definitely one of the cars coming closest to be a usable street legal go-kart

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@mxk It works for me :) Fingers crossed it stays that way. My kids are eagerly awaiting the moment it doesn't so they can get it :)

@jwildeboer Definitely keep it if you can. Will be rare I think in the not-that-far future.

    @publixpace I pay rent for my garage in the basement of the building I live in and that's where it is parked. So no, it doesn't occupy public space nor valuable private land.

    jwildeboer,
    @jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

    @publixpace And as the car is far smaller than most other cars, I can also comfortably park my bicycle and electric scooters at the same place in the garage.

    @publixpace No. It's a 6 apartment building where every apartment has a dedicated parking space in the garage that is in the basement. The owners of the building explicitly do NOT allow renting out parking space to anyone who does NOT live in the building for security reasons. 4 of the 6 apartments are occupied by the owners, 2 are rented, I am one of the renters. Anything else you want to accuse me of, unknown person who doesn't know anything about me and my circumstances?

    @publixpace The other residents actually did complain that I park my bicycle and my e-scooter in the garage. They worried about the fire risk of the battery in my e-scooter. I offered to instead park it on my balcony, where the sun hits hard and would make that risk far higher. They begrudgingly agreed that the garage is the better place :)

    LNSY,

    @jwildeboer and they release the same amount of microplastics into our environment
