bitprophet,

Experimenting with -lsp + and I think I need to dig into the colorscheme options for these 'hover' style 'windows’, because ouchie ouchie, my eyes.

bitprophet, (edited )

Found that desert256 is not part of native (or at least, may not have been back in the day) and so it plus three other /completely random/ 256-color schemes were added to my dotfiles repo.

In 2011.

Two of these (now deleted) were butt-ugly, at least on a modern terminal. A third is desert256, as stated. The last is called "BusyBee" (why no, of course I didn't think to include where I got them, why do you ask? 😩) and it's actually kind of interesting. Certainly a much better hover window.

bitprophet,

Yea, I think it's time to freshen up this ol' biddy with something other than the venerable desert256. I /could/ pick something for its Pmenu (which apparently did not even exist as a color name in 2011? lmao) and keep going, but like. I've apparently been using this same scheme for 13 years or longer…

What's y'all's favorite black-background, aesthetically-pleasing colorscheme?

@bitprophet I’m rocking Dracula over here

bitprophet,

TIL: :set termguicolors in enables some additional, post-256color color support (actual true colors, ie in the millions, if the surrounding environment also supports it)

Right away, even in ol' desert256, it seems to make my cursorline transparent-ish instead of simply an underline. very nice!

EDIT: well, it's nice until I realize that it makes multi-buffer windows that much more difficult to scan (each buffer's cursorline + each buffer's statusline == waugh too many lines!)

@bitprophet I've been using https://github.com/nordtheme/vim for vim, my terminal, desktop env, etc. Nord Across the Board.

bitprophet,

After an unreasonably long (but TBQH, rapid turnaround for me!) research/trial period, I have selected my next colorscheme!

It's Jellybeans! https://github.com/nanotech/jellybeans.vim

I am keeping 2 runners-up for occasional mood swings or "is this odd behavior just my current theme?” debugging:

Kanagawa (via a regular-vim port): https://github.com/leviosa42/kanagawa-mini.vim

and the popular Gruvbox: https://github.com/morhetz/gruvbox - which I wish had an even harder contrast option…

bitprophet,

Obligatory screenshot that roughly mirrors the one at start of thread.

@bitprophet I am too old for dark themes. And not nearly cool enough.

bitprophet,

@petrillic what's age got to do with it? I find light-on-dark way easier on my eyes, as long as it's not one of these ones /aiming/ for low/med contrast with a lighter-than-black background.

(gruvbox is one of those but if I ever switch to it I'm likely to tweak it so it's higher contrast…)

@bitprophet for my eyes, light on dark the halation is quite bad. I suspect this is due to my astygmatism.

bitprophet,

@petrillic interesting. I do have astigmatism but the halation effect is somewhat minimal, at least with my glasses on.

And light-colored app/terminal/etc themes make my eyes go ow, so I gotta make do. (I also don't do well in bright sunlight w/o sunglasses. Am told it's partly as I have blue eyes?)

@bitprophet I'm trying to figure this out, too! I just switch from vim8 to neovim. I was using PaperColor, but now I'm using TokyoNight. It might be a little to “cool" for me. I would like some brighter colors.

bitprophet,

@cwalkatron yea, I assume there are reasons so many dark-bg schemes like those particular fg colors (blues/purples), but it's not my jam.

@bitprophet that’s looks much better

bitprophet,

@greg right? tho I'm not sold yet on the base colorscheme, it's a little muted in spots. but this has prompted me to seek out other alternatives now!

@bitprophet is there a Dracula theme?

bitprophet,

@greg what is a codebase? a miserable little pile of secrets.

bitprophet,

@greg I see this is an actual theme, ok! https://draculatheme.com/vim - slightly too bright/garish for me, but good to know about!

@greg @bitprophet only at night

@bitprophet I agree and I would find something else also but that pink destroyed my eyes. lol
