chuckfrain,

I’m delveing more into finer woodworking (furniture) I’m finding myself in need of a couple of more chisels. Mostly I have a need for under 1/2 inch sizes. I have a 3 piece set right now 1/2, 3/4, and 1 inch big box store versions.

I’m looking into getting a better 6-piece set. Before spending the money I’m wondering what do I want to look for other than the blade material? Is there a thickness or build style to look for? Handle comfort vs material consideratiosn?

Rajiv,

@chuckfrain I would say figure out what sizes you use most and get just those in good quality chisels . I use cheapo set for most of woodworking. But I find that I use 1/4", 1/2" & 1" most. I bought narex chisels for those sizes. if you do want to pick up an entire set, Narex Richter set is pretty good value.

I'd say price vs quality: get the best you can afford. Avoid the big box store stuff. If you are a hard-core hand-tool woodworker (or plan to be), be willing to pay more since you will be using them more.

If you're in the US or Canada, consider Narex chisels from Lee Valley Tools. They are good quality, but reasonably priced. I have what are now called 'Classic Bevel-Edge Chisels.' Been very happy with them. I'm an intermediate power tool woodworker/furniture builder.
