What's a silly fact about you that you'd like to share? I will start: I was a cheerleader for my church basketball team, the Uni-Unis. (Guess what denomination.)

Rajiv,

@spiegelmama I started my first real IT job because that was the only way I could afford to buy film for my camera that my father gave me for my birthday. Ofcourse I got so sucked into the job that I am only now getting back into photography.

In happier news, I am losing my fight to resist buying some adaptalux lights for my macro photography addiction

Rajiv,

@jerry Those look pretty interesting Jerry. I am going to have to take a look at those myself and start saving my pennies.

Rajiv,

@jerry This is really dumb question I know, but bear with me. There is a lot I need to learn about lighting. What is advantage of these over say lens mounted macro ring flash?

Our rules for watching TV.

I must have my legs fully stretched on sofa
I must have specific blanket on my legs
I must not move and disturb Mia's sleep

I think I can live by those rules

I guess I better get out of bed to take some caturday pics.

Rajiv,

Please don't ghost vendors, especially if you're the one who reached out to them. If you're no longer interested, that's fine, just let them know. But ghosting is a great way to make sure that:

a) they won't work with you in the future.
b) if they do work with you, it will be at a much higher cost

Lose extra credibility if you had some form of relationship prior.

Signed - a disgruntled business owner.

Rajiv,

@JohnsNotHere let me just say as person on other side of table, there are vendors and then there are vendors for whom there is special place in hell.
And having come from vendor side myself, I cut my vendors lot of slack….like a lot.

I will just say that I no longer answer my cell unless it’s a number saved in my contacts.

Rajiv,

@JohnsNotHere that is a fair expectation. We make sure that if our priorities change, we let vendors know accordingly.

This is not Jerry level photography, but our catalia just flowered for first time since we bought it.

Mastodon brain trust: does anyone have good that do not require installing an app?
Seeking: reliable pairing with , decent sound, sweat proof, reasonable battery life
Nice to have: noise cancelation
Don't care about: mic, audio customization

I accidentally killed my ancient JLab Epic Sport BT earbuds with a connecting wire - and of course nobody makes that anymore. (If I'm wrong about that, please let me know!!) So I've resigned myself to independent earbuds at this point and am looking for a replacement that Just Works - pairs reliably, doesn't drop out, doesn't get out of sync... Any recommendations greatly appreciated!

Rajiv,

@llorenzin If I may make an uncommon suggestion, I use IsoTunes in my workshop while woodworking. pretty good audio, they work great with my android phone, no app required and they have good noise cancelling.

For full disclosure, I am not an audiophile. But honestly, these sound really good.

These are the ones I have been using for past 2 years.

Rajiv,

@llorenzin yeah ..I am not a fan of fully wireless ones. These are good ear protection and are small enough that they let me wear my trend air shield which is fully enclosed helmet with motorized air filter built in while doing my woodturning

The three million toothbrush botnet story isn’t true.

Here’s the original source of the story: https://archive.is/2024.01.30-203406/https://www.luzernerzeitung.ch/wirtschaft/kriminalitaet-die-zahnbuersten-greifen-an-das-sind-die-aktuellen-cybergefahren-und-so-koennen-sie-sich-schuetzen-ld.2569480

It’s simply a made up example. It doesn’t exist. It starts talking about NoName Ddosia, too, which also isn’t toothbrushes.

Rajiv,

@GossiTheDog It wasn't the toothbrush... was it? :D

@mattblaze I am sure you have heard this enough times, but let me say it again please. I constantly struggle with deciding whether I enjoy your photographs more or detailed explanation of the process and little history lessons that accompany pictures more.

Thank you! I look forward to your posts constantly.

friends:

Say you had a 17 ft long board, and you wanted to make several rip cuts. (And fairly thin rips -- about 30mm.)

Let's also posit that the table saw you have access to is in a room that isn't going to accommodate a board that long.

What would you do?

Track saw?

Rajiv,

@karlnelson all good suggestions. Bandsaw with outfeed support would be my choice. Very curious about your project though...what would require 17' long thin strips? Do share when you can.

And now, I start to contemplate the dreaded firewall migration. Sophos have not been great stewards of the good old Astaro line, and they are giving up on it. I'll try their latest again, but every time I've looked it offers feature parody instead of feature parity with the old Astaro platform.
I have a hunch I'll land on OpnSense, but we'll see.
I don't wanna packet anymore, but I guess I gotta.

Rajiv,

@llorenzin @jack_daniel is OpnSense any better with Realtek NICs than pfSense?

Our bathroom clock died today. Or rather its battery did, and since the clock was a giveaway from Norwest Banks (who got bought in the 90s), we won’t hunt down a replacement battery.

I’d like a replacement that’s an SBC with an ePaper display, and a rechargeable (Ring or equivalent https://www.amazon.com/6040mAh-Rechargeable-Compatible-Doorbell-Spotlight/dp/B0BL1HRXPZ ) battery that shows time and temp / wind speed. I can write the SW and make a nice case, but is there a hardware bundle so I can avoid soldering?

Rajiv,

@davepolaschek I am going to be keeping an eye on this thread for suggestions as I am curious too, but have you looked at offerings from adafruit?

Been thinking about piecing together a desktop PC for photoshop, Lightroom, podcasting, et al. I have a decent laptop, but it seems quite slow for the likes of photoshop. Are desktop processors that much faster than mobile processors these days?

Rajiv,

@jerry definitely. As others have mentioned, things like thermal throttling make difference. I have a desktop for playing with GIMP and davinci resolve. I went for all AMD system for lower cost. It helped that my friend works for amd and I was able to get employee discount thru him.

I have managed to figure out some time ago how to connect to my work laptop over RDP while it was still connected to the VPN, and had forgotten how I had did it. I made a static route between my work laptop and desktop and set the cost metric super low.

The metric for the routes on the TAP interface were manually set to 1. So then I had to reset the cost metric for those routes to where they were more expensive than the static route I made.

Rajiv,

@da_667 say what? GlobalProtect as in PaloAlto?

I have always been fascinated by intricate work like hakone marquetry or Persian equivalent khatamkari. Just saw this documentary on YouTube and thought my family might enjoy it too.

Quick survey because I need to replace my 14-year-old monitor: Do I need a 4k monitor if I'm using it mostly for email, web browsing (with video) and occasional streaming? Is it worth spending extra, or will a non-4k monitor suit my needs? Keep in mind, I'll likely use this monitor for 14 or more years, so please make your recommendation what that in mind.

Update: Thanks for all the comments so far. To answer a few questions: I have room for only 1 monitor, so I want it to be no smaller than 27" because I often have multiple windows open it it'd be nice if I could put them side-by-side sometimes. I'm willing to go bigger, if it fits into my budget. I'd like to spend no more than $600.

Rajiv,

@dangoodin I have been using 34" ultrawide for exact this reason. Mine is asus tuf gaming. But LG, Samsung and other usual suspects have similar offerings.

Why doesn't browser history show you how you got to each webpage, i.e. which webpage you were on when you clicked a link to that webpage? Or does it already do this and I don't know about it? I ask because sometimes I'll be on some random webpage and go "how tf did I end up here?" The browser history doesn't help because I could have come from any of the hundreds of pages in my history.

Rajiv,

@carrickdb thats on edge. i know that works on chrome too

Here are a few more orchid pictures. I have been trying to figure out what a “good” orchid picture looks like, and the I feel like the internet is letting me down. Lots of orchid pictures, not many that I would say are “art” worthy.

Rajiv,

@jerry I have been watching videos by https://www.youtube.com/@CameraClubLive to learn some good lighting techniques.

And your pictures look pretty good to my uninformed eyes.
