Every time they say “MLS Cup” instead of “the MLS Cup”, I die inside a little.
I know “MLS” doesn’t take an article, because “soccer” is uncountable. But “the” in “the MLS Cup” would apply to “cup”, not “MLS”, and “cup” obviously does take an article.
It’s a stupid hyper-correction that someone came up with and decided was right, and now the league has put that in all the branding, so everyone on tv has to say it that way. Absurd. Grating.
