Released in 2009, Trine is a 2.5D physics-based puzzle platformer with a fantasy theme. It is the first game in the Trine series.

This game was a smashing success. It has sold millions of copies worldwide, and yet there are few deep diving essays or retrospectives about Trine. I believe there’s three reasons for this: Trine is a 2.5D platformer made during a time that genre was unfashionable, it was made primarily for PC, and it was developed by an indie studio from Finland.

In this game, you play as three heroes at once: Amadeus the Wizard, Pontius the Knight, and Zoya the Thief. At the beginning of the game, all three of them converge on an object, called the Trine, that binds their souls together. This causes them to live in one existent body, but phase in and out of each of their former bodies at your choosing. What this all means is that, as you’re playing, you can choose the wizard, the knight, or the thief according to whichever one you find most useful at the moment.

Each character has strengths and weaknesses. Pontius has a sword and shield, Zoya has a grappling hook and a bow and arrow, Amadeus has no weapon but he can levitate objects and conjure boxes. Much of the challenge for Trine is figuring out which character is best suited to the environment.

Now when I say that Trine was made primarily for PC, the controls bear that out. For example, with Amadeus, you must draw a box in order to conjure them. On a gamepad, you must use right joystick and left trigger. This is imprecise and you don’t always get it right. But on PC, you can simply draw the box with a mouse.

The original version of Trine didn’t even have gamepad support. Only with the Enchanted Edition update did gamepad become usable – but it’s still not as good as keyboard and mouse.

The graphics are excellent. Nowadays, you can play the original version or Enchanted Edition, which uses the same game engine as Trine 2. I definitely love the aesthetic of the original. However, I think Enchanted Edition has beautiful lighting and particle effects – that’s my preferred version. I mean, it really does resemble a fairy tale!

Sound is where Trine strikes gold. The effects are sumptuous. The narration is comedic and frames the story well. In terms of music, it has a folksy orchestral sound that, funny enough, reminds me of Christmas.

Trine also has a local co-op mode. I haven’t played this as I rarely game with other people. Perhaps I should give it a shot, though, with my daughter.

This is a game that’s playable on any modern PC, though I recommend the Enchanted Edition over the original. You need a 2Ghz single core CPU, 1GB of RAM, 256MB of VRAM, and 4GB of space. Trine is available natively for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It is quite playable for Steam Deck.

In addition to Steam Deck, Trine has been ported to PS3 and OnLive.

There’s no microtransactions. However, you can buy the soundtrack as DLC on Steam. Usually, it’s C$11.49, but it’s on sale right now for -75% off at C$2.87. That said, on GOG.com, the soundtrack comes with the game.

Frozenbyte developed Trine. They made the next four sequels to Trine, including the newly released Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy. They are also well-known for the Shadowgrounds series, Nine Parchments, and Starbase.

On Steam, Trine has a 95% positive rating based on 11,592 reviews. Many people call this a platforming classic with graphics and sound that have aged well. The few detractors that exist say that it lacks variety.

When this game came out, some people compared it to Braid. Personally, I think the two games are nothing alike, but I guess 2009 was the year that new “2D” games (Trine isn’t really 2D) were coming back into fashion. It’s funny, Trine wasn’t as critically acclaimed as Braid, but Trine has aged much better than Braid. Right now, I definitely think more people would rather play Trine.

On Steam, Trine sells for C$16.99, but it’s on sale for -75% off at C$4.24. In comparison, GOG.com usually sells Trine for C$20.39, but it’s on sale for -75% off at C$5.09. The GOG.com version of Trine comes with wallpapers, avatars, artworks, and the soundtrack, while the Steam version does not. Again, on Steam, you must buy the soundtrack as separate DLC.

I recommend Trine. It is, in my opinion, one of the best puzzle platformers of all time. It did not set the world on fire when it was originally released – it generated no hype – but the love for this game has been a slow burn that’s simmered for many years. More people really do need to experience the first Trine, the one that made an unforgettable fairy tale experience. It is enchanting.

Walop,

@atomicpoet These are so great local co-op games. Even the unfortunate third one that got cut short. But fortunately the studio survived and the fourth and fifth one returned back to the original 2.5D gameplay style with all the strengths and physics puzzles.

I don't love the idea of my money going to fund the companies destroying the world, but most mutual funds seems to do that, and the banks, who knows what they do?

So I've started #investing a bit of my money in solar panel infrastructure trough #Trine. They show me exactly where my money goes, and to what: Installing rooftop solar!

I'm supposed to get my money back w/interest, but there's ofc a risk. But the risk from investing in world destroyers is worse, IMO.

Wow, I've already gotten my first repayment from my investment! As you can see above I was supposed to only get that in May, then the second in August, but now I've gotten my first €15 (and can withdraw it immediately), and the repayment schedule has been bumped up so that my second repayment will come already in June!

This seems very promising for the whole investment to actually be monetarily profitable. Here's hoping!

Hey, 2 more people signed up and invested in solar panels trough my link to Trine after this, getting me up to 3 referrals. That means that my chart over the impact I've had on reducing co2 emissions now looks like this. That's awesome! Thanks, all!

If you want to join we both get €25 extra to invest with trough this link, and I can keep seeing how posting in the fediverse makes a change :) https://trine.com/invite/270283

Hurray! Two more people have signed up trough my link, and I've reinvested all the money I got from the repayment + the referrals.

And so now we have passed 70 tons of co2 avoided! Up about 5 tons from my previous post.

I hope everyone remembers that as with any investments there's also risks here. But the potential rewards are so much greater than just money. We need a world where those who want to do good can also access capital. So we need to invest in that.
