Chrome has a different behaviour from FF and Safari.

They used be the same. I'm not sure if the spec changes or Chrome has a bug in recent releases

QDOOM (recreating Doom episode 1 in Quake) is a cool project but it is clear from the video that everything is squashed. The sprites in QDOOM appear to have square pixels and the entire level geometry is squashed, too. This is because the graphics were originally designed for 4:3 aspect ratio at 320x200 resolution, which means the pixels themselves have an aspect ratio of 4:5 (tall pixels) and the X/Y/Z coordinates in DOOM are 1:1 with the pixels.

Today, I want to draw attention to a bonus recently included with DX. The "vapor style" patch included with the latest release transforms the regular hack into the "Aesthetic Edition."

Features:
-Vaporwave-inspired colors
-Guest graphics from SMB2 (u AND j)
-Statues
-Columns
-Surreal checkerboard surfaces
-VHS tracking drift font
-Nihilistic messages
AND
-An entirely new soundtrack by Amilgi, covering retro jingles and iconic tracks!

Vaporwave-themed Super Mario Bros screen shot

flamepanther,

A smaller channel, Oppaiman100, also made a video showcasing Super Mario Bros DX: Aesthetic Edition! This one uses a less saturated palette, though it's a bit stretched.

users, Got a good one for ya! I have TV-captured videos that are all X:576. Most are good at 768, but some are 760, some are 758, etc.

I want to center horizontally the video in the frame and leave the vertical alone. I don't mind black bars filling in the left and right BUT I DO NOT WANT TO RESIZE - ie: stretch!

Yeah, I know. Don't ask why I want to make it this way, please. Also, I'll prob hevc not x264.

I think this will do it. Code in attached next msg in 🧵.

@lisamelton So, this is my one-liner:

ffmpeg6 -i movie1.m4v -aspect 4:3 -vf 'scale=768:576:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=768:576:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,setsar=1' -c:v hevc_videotoolbox -profile:v main -b:v 8M -c:a copy -tag:v hvc1 -f mp4 movie1-new.m4v

Does anything in this one-liner scream "he's doing it wrong!"? OR is anything here that I don't need?

TIA!

Todays DOS gaming basics: Aspect ratios!

Thanks to for doing a video about the examination of the 4:3 aspect ratio of DOS gaming - primarily VGA Mode 13h and 320x200 - why it is not a widescreen aspect ratio despite all of the examples across the web.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvckyWxHAIw

At DOSBox Staging there are big improvements coming regarding aspect ratios!

  • Screenshots will be always aspect ratio corrected by default in the next version.

  • "Pixel Perfect" mode is removed and replaced by 'integer_scaling'

off: No integer scaling constraint; the aspect ratio correct image fills the viewport (default).

horizontal: Constrain the horizontal scaling factor to integer values within the viewport.

vertical: Constrain the vertical scaling factor to integer values within the viewport.

The most important thing to remember: DOSBox Staging provides an optimal experience out of the box, most of the time!
