I looked into PubMed reports of spicy pepper related illness a while back because of reports saying that people were "burned" by spice. is receptor mediated as I understand the biology (TRPV1) and the molecular isn't toxic to humans outside of its irritant effects - it doesn't burn, it makes your nerves perceive burning. The article showing harm was because someone ate a pepper and vomited so violently that they tore their esophagus.
