Well, that's the end of the hour, but never the end of fun! Thanks to everyone who contributed today; I love seeing how our Mastodon group is taking off. :) Next time is our next installment of our Immigration Series - Canadian Immigration Records with guest expert M. Diane Rogers. September 9 @genchat

Maps are definitely important. And the historic maps can be so much fun just for the aesthetics. For anyone else doing research in Sweden, the great map site I use is
https://minkarta.lantmateriet.se/

@bethroots @genchat And there's so many kinds of maps that can tell us different things, which adds texture to our ancestors' stories.

MarianBWood,

@genchat @bethroots @genchat Maps helped me understand choice of Gretna Greens where some ancestors of my husband slipped away to get married. Especially convenient after railroads linked so many small towns with bigger towns or cities across state lines in US!

Another fun thing this week ... one of my matches who anonymised himself got outed by Thrulines this week. His mom did the test as did his daughter both of whom were recognisable so when their Thrulines popped up he was placed firmly in the middle 😄

MarianBWood,

@RobertJackson58585858 Great! Anything new as a result?

@RobertJackson58585858 I love it! Can't escape what DNA will say! @genchat

@bethroots @genchat They have been gone for quite a few years; I just have not been able to visit the cemetery in a decade. I am proud to have been able to finally pay my respects in person.

    @bethroots It's always awesome when we find our family popping up in different parts of our research! @genchat

    @MarianBWood @genchat I knew you'd have something to share about your books!

    MarianBWood,

    @genchat @genchat This is the last photo book for a while. I use professional photo sites like Shutterfly & Snapfish for quality (buying on sale). Earlier in year I created photo book about paternal grandparents...before that, photo book about my Mom & her twin sis. Before that, photo book about ancestors in WWII. Been busy and enjoying sharing with younger generation.

    MarianBWood,

    @bethroots @genchat @genchat Usually no discount for multiples, but I wait for sales such as 40% and/or free shipping. Process: I print ONE copy to check that everything looks good. THEN I print the rest after making any corrections/changes. Sales usually every month so I print when I can save

    MarianBWood,

    @genchat @genchat Wow, quite a find. No problem getting these legal documents?

    genchat,
    @genchat@lor.sh avatar

    @MarianBWood @genchat Nope. They're in the Judicial Archives. I suppose that once they're released to the archives, they're ok to retrieve. At least in Massachusetts!

    @OurAncestors @genchat It was the actual divorce papers filed in the court. Probably doesn't have all the juicy stuff today's documents would have, but it did answer some general questions.

    OurAncestors,

    @genchat @genchat Hi it's not a recent discovery but it was fun to find out I guess - my 2 times great grandmother, Eleanor Isabella Chapman nee Coxhead remarried as a widow aged 56 to a 21 year old David Ritchie Masterton Oswald in Edinburgh in 1935

    genchat,
    @genchat@lor.sh avatar

    @OurAncestors @genchat That's an interesting discovery...I'm sorry that you & your cousin are going through that, but something good did come out of it in finding each other? Also a good reminder to think of our family health histories.

    @genchat@lor.sh avatar

    @OurAncestors @genchat And your 2xGreat-grandmother -- good for her, I guess!

    Hello ...

    ... my great grandad b 1852 was born in Smethwick at the time when the Birmingham Canal ran through reputedly the largest man-made earthwork on the planet. It was a stone's throw from his birthplace also near the Great Smethwick (steam) engine now in Birmingham's science museum.

    bjnlsgenealogy,

    @genchat @genchat I have been investigating the life of Nancy Barnes (my husband's 2nd Great Grandmother) who signed the 1893 suffrage petition in Dunedin New Zealand under her marred name Hindle. Next month (Sept 2023) marks 130 years since New Zealand women got the vote, and Nancy played a small part in making that happen
