Doing some #worldbuilding for my #kaendor videogame and defining the laws and mechanisms by which magic works.
I created something that looks logical, consistent, and functional. But there's just no interesting consequences or questions that result from that, which would set off compelling stories or mysteries.
That's very much useless worldbuilding.
It adds information to process, but does not add anything.
For a very long time I wanted to create a fantasy world that is "like #DarkSun (or more recently #Kenshi), but in green".
But somehow, there is some kind of somber dignity in desert settings that forest settings just don't have.
Maybe it's related to being unable to see the forest for all the trees. You don't get the sense of timeless desolation when there's probably hundreds of animals hidden from view just a few dozen paces away.
Trying to come up with a cool banner for one of the factions in #Kaendor that uses dark purple as the base color makes me realize why we don't really see purple flags.
There aren't really any good secondary colors to combine with it. Gold kind of works with lighter purple shades, but that's only a single option. Black looks good with everything, but on dark purple you won't be able to make out any shapes.
Playing Hollow Knight is really making me want to go all in with the Mythic Underworld approach for my next wilderness exploration game. Not just dungeons with lots of rooms and ever deeper levels, but underground biomes full of strange creatures different from surface life, wifh isolated settlements and odd inhabitants to meet and interact with.
