Swiss voters approve net-zero climate law to accelerate the country’s shift from fossil fuels to renewable energies and reach zero emissions by 2050 (web.archive.org)

It’s the first time that citizens have approved a net-zero law in a direct vote. In all, 59.1% of voters approved the government’s new climate and innovation law. The government and all major parties, except for the right-wing Swiss People’s Party, had called to vote in favour of the bill.

Many Britons say that they can't afford lettuce is not funny. And it's not 'puerile.'

"Do the lives of Russians anywhere matter to the Russian empire? The answer is simple – they don’t," a political scientist says (web.archive.org)

"The emperor only values his throne and will do anything to protect it, while all others are mere resources to be exploited," writes Aleksandar Đokić, a Serbian political scientist and former lecturer at RUDN University in Moscow. "In other words, the Russian empire is knowingly throwing its own people, people of its own...

In Putin's Russia, there are no citizens, just subjects

This is how Russia has operated from the times of Ivan the Terrible, when the backs of princes and their princedoms were broken, ushering in an era of never-ending despotism.

Imagine living under such a political system, generation after generation, century after century, knowing that your own existence means nothing to lords, Bolshevik commissars, and finally, Vladimir Putin’s cronies.

0x815,

Reading an article is a good way to avoid posting garbage.

0x815,

Yes, already in the title we can read of " Putin's empire" and it's clear all over the analysis that the author doesn't refer with "empire" to the Russia before 1917. I guess @Johnny Wild misinterpreted the text (maybe intentionally? Unfortunately there are some people here on Lemmy who are intentionally misinterpreting some content, although recently this is becoming more and more better imho).

0x815,

Absolutely, America has done some fucked up things in the last 100 or so years, but there's no way to justify one crime with another which is what some posters here on Lemmy often appear to suggest. I feel such attempts to portray moral equivalency is another insult to the victims of these horrors.

"I’m beginning to understand that we’re not on the right side" - Russian soldiers who surrendered say morale on the Russian side is very low (web.archive.org)

One captured Russian soldier says he worries about what will happen if he is returned to Russia in a prisoner swap. “If I have the opportunity, I’ll refuse to be exchanged." Another fighter reported that a doctor declared him unfit for combat after he was wounded in March, but his commander ordered him back to the front.

0x815,

History has been teaching us painfully often how quick people give up their individual believes for the sake of a centralised propaganda machine. It'd be very dangerous to think we are immune to it imho.

A senior United Nations relief official said that Russia has so far declined requests to help residents of Russian-controlled areas of southern Ukraine impacted by the breach of the Kakhkova dam.

‘This job simply cannot be done sober’: As the war rages on, Russian officials’ alcohol consumption is reaching new heights (web.archive.org)

In Russia, deputy governors or higher rank close to the Kremlin, in the Federal Assembly, and regional authorities drink on a regular basis. “They frequently miss meetings, show up drunk to events, and take illicit substances,” said one source. “Now, more than ever, employees in the president’s administration start their...

Environmental destruction will be criminalized soon enough, bringing about a radical cultural shift, says Jojo Mehta of Stop Ecocide International (web.archive.org)

It is inevitable that we will criminalize ecocide, potentially within a matter of years, Mehta says. And when we do, she envisions a new paradigm in which we take environmental destruction as seriously as the destruction of human life, and in which corporate CEOs dramatically rethink their liabilities when it comes to damaging...

‘I’m afraid I won’t make it to 15 June’: Russian Activist Anatoly Berezikov predicted his own death and died in a jail for minor offenders on 14 June (web.archive.org)

Berezikov's lawyers believe that their client was tortured at the police station during the several hours that she was looking for him. She managed to take a photo of Berezikov’s back in the courthouse: the lawyer believes there were stun gun bruises on it. “He told me in the courthouse: I won’t make it to 15 June. I’m...

US special prosecutor Jack Smith is no hero but a professional doing his job — and that is exactly why Donald Trump fears him (web.archive.org)

During his decades-long career, Smith has shown himself to be an extremely skilled and highly competent legal professional and public servant. He has successfully prosecuted international war criminals, corrupt politicians, and members of criminal organizations. The special counsel is methodical, focused and task-oriented. It is...

There is Nothing Fair About the European Commission’s “Fair Share” Proposal, says the EFF (web.archive.org)

After the European Commission held a public consultation on whether they should adopt what they call a “fair share” proposal, they unfortunately voted to move forward with this dangerous plan. This proposal is nothing but a network usage fees regime, which would force certain companies to pay internet service providers...

‘A sense of betrayal’: liberal dismay as Muslim-led US city bans Pride flags (web.archive.org)

In 2015, many liberal residents in Hamtramck, Michigan, celebrated as their city became the first in the United States to elect a Muslim-majority city council. They viewed the power shift and diversity as a meaningful rebuke of the Islamophobic rhetoric of then Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign. This...

The same is true for ideologies. It's the same irrational approach imo.

Unlikely crusade: Are Muslim immigrants joining the anti-LGBTQ right? Yes and no

Over the last two weeks, a series of contentious and even violent LGBTQ Pride month protests, from Southern California to suburban Maryland to Ottawa to Calgary, have given rise to a new hope on the right: Has the push for LGBTQ rights and representation so badly alienated immigrant and Muslim communities that these generally liberal or left-leaning constituencies are switching sides? Across social and right-wing media, conservative pundits and activists have trumpeted that claim. "The Arab community is sending a message to the woke that they are not accepting this!" "Selling immigrants on hating liberals would be the easiest thing in the world." Crusade nobody saw coming. Muslims, Christians, and Atheists vs. Pro-Child Mutilation groomers."

A habitat in the Canary Islands attracts endangered angelsharks and European tourists. For once, this isn’t bad for the wildlife. (web.archive.org)

North of the island’s capital, Santa Cruz, is a long crescent-shaped beach of soft yellow sand, with groves of palm trees and a calm bay created by a long breakwater. This is Playa de las Teresitas, a magnet for northern European tourists craving winter sun. But most of the people sunbathing on Teresitas are likely unaware of...

There is an interesting story about their survival.

Indigenous knowledge, bravery, vigilance

Thirteen-year-old Lesly Mukutuy was able to identify edible fruits, find suitable water and avoid dangerous plants and animals thanks in part to knowledge handed down to her by Valencia.

“We have to recognise not only her bravery but also her leadership,” the minister of defence, Iván Velásquez, said on Sunday after a visit to Bogotá’s military hospital, where the children are being treated for malnutrition and minor injuries. “We can say that it was because of her that her three younger siblings could survive by her side, thanks to her care and her knowledge of the jungle.”

BlackCat claims they hacked Reddit and will leak the data

Operators broke into Reddit on February 5, 2023, and took 80 gigabytes (zipped) of data. Reddit was emailed twice by operators, once on April 13 and one again on June 16.

There was no attempt to find out what we took.

In our last email to them, we stated that we wanted $4.5 million in exchange for the deletion of the data and our silence. As we also stated, if we had to make this public, then we now demand that they also withdraw their API pricing changes along with our money or we will leak it.

We expect to leak the data.
