Did tiktok change something?

I have friends that send me tiktok links via whatsapp and then they ask questions about it like “what do you think, scam or not”. I used to open them with cookies rejected in ddg browser but now it pretends to freeze after 4 seconds of play, then it says that i must open it in the app and replaces the “play” button with...

Distributions intended for hardware diagnosis and other related utilities

Within the GNU/Linux ecosystem there are all kinds of tools to diagnose the system, or rather, to check the state of the hardware, but there are few distributions specifically designed to perform this task, or at least that I know of, because the only distribution I know that is intended to diagnose the computer, (Or at...

AnEilifintChorcra,

FG or Dodi because of file size. Mainly use Lutris, and setup up my games in a GameName with game and prefix as the subdirectories. This way I have separate prefixes for every game so I don’t have to worry about one games dependencies messing up another game or a wine update breaking it.

I’ll try a few prefixes and add dll’s (usually dx and vcrun dll’s fix any issues) with winetricks but if they don’t work, I’ll add it to Steam and if that works then copy the proton prefix and replace the steam dll with Goldberg’s

If that doesn’t work, jc141 or LinuxRulez usually works, but their compresion ratios just aren’t as good as FG and Dodi unfortunately.

ROMs are usually from myrient or archive but I always check Gnarly first for PS3 because they have great compression ratios. I convert PS1 and PS2 to chd for smaller file size I always use portable versions or appimages of emulators and setup auto backups of the emulators save folders that default to the system drive, like RPCS3, to make them more portable.

I archive the compressed files with the prefix and any notes on changes I made for that setup to make it easier for future me to get games up and running for others or if I want to play again. I converted nsp to nsz before archiving too. I also don’t keep games on the system drive.

When I started using linux a few years ago, I would constantly either switch distros or completely break the system with no idea how to fix it so I would just reinstall it. I’ve also become a bit of a data hoarder so my goal is always to make each game small, portable and separated from the others so they can be used on pretty much whatever PC without much effort.

AnEilifintChorcra,

My dads friend used to burn random movies to DVD and give them to us. Eventually, he showed my dad where to get them and my dad showed me. I think it was the uploader axxo on isohunt that my dad would always download from. I nearly completely forgot about that, thanks for making me think about it! We really had no idea what we were doing, we used to use utorrent and everything. That family computer was riddled with viruses. It took us about an hour to remove some random extensions that changed our default search engine one time

  • I think an animals life is more important than my taste buds. Animal agricultural is immoral, unsustainable and unnecessary. I don’t want to be a part of that and I want to have the least amount of impact on the world as I can while I’m here. Leave it the way you found it etc.

  • That depends, if they have the option not to then yeah. Killing when its not necessary is cruel. Hens eat their own eggs for nourishment, so there’s no need to rob them for no reason. Female mammals have to be impregnated before they’ll start lactating. Pregnancy can be very painful, uncomfortable and life threatening, ask any mother. You can’t treat another being ethically if their purpose is to allow you to either murder, rob or forcefully impregnate them.

  • Climate change impact. Taxes to subsidise private companies in the industry instead of going to healthcare, housing education etc. The mental health and working conditions of people working in slaughterhouses. Increased prevalence and risk of zoonotic diseases. Inflated land value and underdeveloped areas, probably more specific to my country. Biodiversity loss. Endangered species ending up as bycatch.

  • 6 years ago, I was reading a paper on climate change, where it talked about the impact of animal agriculture on the environment, then I watched some videos on animal agriculture and couldn’t make it through 20 minutes of Dominion, I switched over night

  • Constantly being asked do I miss meat etc. Basically no restaurants near me have vegan options, but tbh its such a good excuse to get out of going for dinner since I hate eating out lol

  • Eating meat is engrained into a lot of people and they have just never questioned it because “that’s just the way it is” so when they’re faced with a moral dilemma that goes against something that has become so normal to them, they get confused and feel guilty which causes a negative reaction. The realities of animal agriculture are an uncomfortable truth that people don’t want to think about and vegans are their reminder.

Thanks for taking the time to ask about this stuff, its not easy to come into a space where you’re the odd one out and start a difficult discussion. Hopefully you see some stuff here that interests you so you can go read about it and who knows, maybe this might be your catalyst!

AnEilifintChorcra,

I caved into my urges and started playing Baldurs Gate 3 again, this time as a dark urge

I finished it for the first time a few weeks ago and have wanted to do nothing but play it again but I never replay games like ever. I held out for as long as I could but no other game was calling to me like BG3

I never understood how people could keep replaying games, I always thought the new game+ concept was pointless but now I get it, now I understand why people have put thousands of hours into Skyrim

I nearly never even bothered to try BG3 because I’ve never played anything with turn based mechanics and I know nothing about D&D but now its all I want to play, I’m worried I’ll never want to play anything else again lol

AnEilifintChorcra,

Maybe not exactly what you’re looking for but I found this a few weeks ago github.com/k2-fsa/sherpa-onnx and I haven’t really seen anyone talk about it

I’ve been using the tts on android for navigation and its way better than rhvoice and espeak.

I did try stt on android and it worked great but I’ve never used stt before so I don’t know how good it is compared to other stt

AnEilifintChorcra,

Are you seeding a lot of torrents?

Something similar kept happening to me last year, constantly disconnecting no matter what I tried. I thought it was a gluetun issue so I stopped using docker and tried the official ProtonVPN app, openvpn, wireguard and community version of protonvpn, I tried switching from arch to ubuntu on my NAS and the same thing kept happening.

I was convinced it was a hardware issue so I tried different hardware, same issues.

The only thing that fixed it was reducing the number of torrents I had seeding. At the time I had ~500 and once I lowered it, I stopped disconnecting.

Now I run 3 gluetun containers with 1 qbittorrent container connected to each and they each have ~400 torrents seeding and I haven’t had any issues since.

AnEilifintChorcra,

The size of the file and speed shouldn’t be an issue, unless its crazy high speeds, I’m seeding a bunch of 80+ GB files, I think for me it was the number of connections being made that was causing the disconnects for me.

I assume its not something basic like the ProtonVPN subscription lapsed or one of the issues mentioned in the link in the logs github.com/qdm12/gluetun-wiki/…/healthcheck.md

I’d try a few different countries and see if its that specific one, I like to have 3 different countries listed in my compose files so if there are issues with one countries servers it just connects to the next country instead

You could also try switching between wireguard and openvpn configs to see if that helps github.com/qdm12/gluetun-wiki/blob/…/custom.md#wi…

AnEilifintChorcra,

Unfortunately Linux is affected github.com/leviathansecurity/TunnelVision

TunnelVision appears to work on any operating system that has a DHCP client that implements support for DHCP option 121. Most modern operating systems support this such as Linux, Windows, iOS and MacOS. Notably, Android does not appear to have support for option 121 and remains unaffected.

A fix is available on Linux when configuring the VPN users host to utilize network namespaces.

I read the Arstechnica article too where they say Linux isn’t affected then link to the researchers video where they show Linux being affected…

AnEilifintChorcra,

Tbh I’m just so tired of it, my whole life I’ve been warned about this constantly, non stop, and nobody with any power does anything effective ever.

I do all my little environmentally friendly things and they’re all just routine now. I rarely even bother to read about it anymore because its so depressing and I’ve been told lie after lie after lie that this policy will help and that regulation will be great and and these new laws will counteract it and then… Nothing, just right back to destroying this pale blue dot

Lutris with Dying Light 2 - Exit code 768

So…Yeah. Fitgirl’s repack seems to install correctly without crashes. But…I get exit code 768 almost instantly after starting it. I get to see for less than a fraction of a second the Dying Light launcher banner, which disappears immediately, and the runner stops with exit code 768 and no visible errors. What can I do? AMD...

AnEilifintChorcra,

Never played it so here’s generic things I do to get random games working

  • Update system: Ensure system, graphic drivers and wine are up to date
  • Install dependencies: Usually during installation FG give the option to install/update VCrun etc. You can use wine tricks to easily install those dependencies to your prefix.
  • Use wine staging or WineGE: Try different versions of GE
  • Add it as a non Steam game to Steam and enable proton with it
  • Add the crack: If the game requires a specific crack ensure you copy the contents of whichever crack is provided to the root game directory and overwrite whatever it asks you to since FG provides all game files as is without the cracks enabled by default, I’m pretty sure

AnEilifintChorcra,

Debian based distros tend to be slower to update for stability reasons so your graphics drivers might be out of date

github.com/ValveSoftware/gamescope

AMD requires Mesa 20.3+, Intel requires Mesa 21.2+. For NVIDIA’s proprietary driver, version 515.43.04+ is required (make sure the nvidia-drm.modeset=1 kernel parameter is set).

Do these games launch when the gamescope option is disabled?

You can also check the logs by selecting the game in lutris and pressing the arrow beside the play button on the bottom to bring up the logs and see if theres any useful info there

AnEilifintChorcra,

I started Alan Wake Remaster but it has really bad visual bugs, my screen keeps going black every minute or 2 and I have to pause the game for a few seconds to fix it so I don’t know if I’ll keep it going lol

I started it because Control and Quantum Break look so fun so I might just skip to them instead. Happy to see another positive opinion of Control, I’m super excited to try it!

I’ve just started God of War Ascension today, I’ve never played any of the series so I decided to play them in chronological order, well at least the ones I can play since the mobile one doesn’t seem to be available and I don’t have FB to play that one.

Its super fun, I love that they put the button prompts on the side of the screen that the button is on since I’m using an Xbox controller. But I’m not a big fan of how often they zoom out while I’m in the middle of fighting monsters. I just kept spamming quick attack on the back of the snakes because I couldn’t tell which character I was lol

AnEilifintChorcra,

Settings -> Apps -> Eternity -> Mobile Data and WiFi

Depending on your ROM, you should see one or all of these toggles

  • Allow network access
  • WiFi data
  • Mobile data
  • Background data
  • VPN data
  • Unrestricted data usage

The first 2 at least should be enabled by default

Tbh I don’t think this is the issue, there hasn’t been an update to eternity in 6 months and I wouldn’t be surprised if its buggy from a Lemmy update

AnEilifintChorcra,

All my drives are encrypted and have an encrypted backup of 2FA, a whole bunch of drives and my phone would all have to fail at the same time. This is following 3-2-1 so not all are in the same place or running at the same time

I use veracrypt to make encrypted portable files that contain 2FA and I back them up to random cloud storage using simplelogin email accounts, no 2FA on these for this exact reason. I know my password manager passphrase but I also do the same thing with it as the 2FA file just on a different account.

If any of the accounts gets hijacked then all they have is a throwaway email and password for that account and a random tiny encrypted file.

My codes aren’t labeled with the email that they are for, just the service, e.g Proton1, and the passphrase has no other information stored with it so even if they magically managed to decrypt either of the files and gain access to the codes/ passphrase they don’t have any idea what accounts any of them are for.

Log in to a cloud storage -> download the file -> decrypt it -> add it to any compatible app -> login to the password manager

AnEilifintChorcra,

This guy is a DRM developer and he experienced frequent crashes and instability after bypassing Denuvo so he’s not going to be the next Empress unfortunately

AnEilifintChorcra,

Please no, not bigger! Its been months and I’ve only reached Wyrms Crossing this week! I have so many other games to play and not enough time to play them all

AnEilifintChorcra,

Hi i am a complete noob who want to get into torrenting and piracy in general can people here help??

And before you say i have read the megathread atleast as much as i can because it feels too buzzwordy for me and i think it is more suitable with people with a little more experience than for litteral noobs also i want to leaen how to in android and not a pc and the megathread leans heavily into pc ....

AnEilifintChorcra,

Fennec is a Firefox fork on F-droid, use this as your browser and install ublock origin as your adblocker. Top right menu in fennc then press add-ons and find ublock origin and install it. Customise by pressing the top right menu of fennec -> add-ons -> ublock origin -> settings

Then just use the direct download sites in the megathread to download your files from. You can follow something like this video to harden ublock and make sure you block the ads that pretend to be download links.

OR

If you want to seed (upload the files you download from the torrent) back to other people like you, then use fennec, the same as above, but use the torrent sites linked in the mega thread instead of direct download sites and use a torrent client like libretorent on the F-droid repo to add the magnet links or torrent files you get from these sites. It will start downloading the files and also uploading the parts you have downloaded to other people that want them.

I always recommend a VPN and on android you can turn on always on VPN and and block connections without VPN in android settings but that’s up to you and what your country is like when it comes to piracy

OR

Others might be able to suggest a streaming setup? But I don’t stream anything so can’t help you there

AnEilifintChorcra,

If your screen is turning black when you go full screen, try turning Adaptive Sync to Never. This has solved the problem for me.

System Settings -> Display & Monitor -> Adaptive Sync

AnEilifintChorcra,

Check under Display Configuration, its at the top of the list where Gamma is in your screenshot. I’m also using Wayland, so maybe its not available for X11?

Edit: The archwiki might be more helpful, it shows how to access the settings depending on your set up wiki.archlinux.org/title/Variable_refresh_rate
