Jalapeno Cheetos. I eat them out of the bag with chopsticks so I don’t get spicy, orange fingers.

Oh, yeah. Getting an invite to some of the seafaring groups in college was horizon-broadening. And also lots and lots of Eminem tracks for some reason.

Huh. Interesting movie to be the one that inspires a person to search out the high seas. Happy sailing.

Do we need to create increasingly more children for a stable economy?

So in the whole anti-natalism/pro-natalism conversation (which I’m mostly agnostic/undecided on, currently), my friend who is a pro-natalist, argued that the success/stability of our world economy is dependent on procreating more children each year than the previous year, so that we not only replace the numbers of the people...

Vanth,
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

Pro/anti-natalism is an unnecessary binary. There is also an option to be for procreative freedom.

I want people to be able to have children if they want them, and to not have children if they don’t want them. I want a society structured in such a way it doesn’t require people to make those decisions for any reasons other than their own personal ones.

Vanth,
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

No, mostly because I don’t want to waste things in general. I don’t drive an EV, I fly for work and vacation, I eat meat. But I still won’t waste things just for… revenge?

I will take my sweet time in the bathroom, and I will order slightly nicer food while traveling on a work account versus traveling on my own dime.

Vanth,
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

Yeah, I like to eat them occasionally. I recently bought a little snack pack of them to eat on a plane trip. I ended up not eating them bc the lady next to me politely asked me not to due to her sensitivity to the smell and already growing motion sickness.

So curious about the olive-dislikers in this thread:

Does the smell of olives bother you?

The main drag didn’t grow with the population, so traffic to get across the city is 10x worse.

A gay bar shut down for normal, boring business reasons and not because it was hate-crimed like the gay bar that closed when I was a child.

An attempt was made to make a pedestrian-friendly Entertainment District downtown. They forgot to make any changes to actually encourage and protect pedestrians though. Lots of cute little shops and restaurants packed in an area no one wants to walk through.

Fiber! And laid by the city so no one company can claim it to form a new monopoly. We have not one but competing fiber providers!

The football team is still massively popular, despite the golden years being 20+ years ago. So the change is maybe increased desperation intertwined with the neverending optimism that a new golden area is just a season or two out.

Vanth,

NYC, watch out!

Vanth,

So this is the sort of claim where sources would be really nice. I don’t like Musk, but I’m not about to blindly believe everything said about him.

Remember how CrossFit got popular and then everyone hated it and the only thing more annoying than a vocal crossfitter was a vocal opponent of CrossFit who knew nothing and had merely jumped on the hype train?

Musk is CrossFit, right now. A powerful, dangerous CrossFit. Don’t undercut criticism of him by making lazy, unsubstantiated claims.

Treat other women / talk about other women like you want her to be treated / talked about by men.

Respecting and partnering with your spouse teaches your daughter a model of respectful partner she can look for as an adult.

Seeing how you treat other women, friends, strangers, service workers, teaches her how she should expect to be treated by men.

Seeing how you treat other boys and men also teaches her a model to set her expectations around. If you treat boys and men similar to how you treat girls and women, she sees that and grows up knowing she deserves equal respect. If you treat boys/men differently, specially, with more respect, your daughter will grow up and expect to be treated as secondary by other men.

If you see men mistreating women, you don’t have to confront them necessarily, but make sure your daughter knows what they are doing is not ok. Sometimes the world isn’t fair, but it’s still wrong and we want to be people who make the world a better place.

The company I work for installed a gender-neutral bathroom, but in a weird location, down a long hall no one really has any reason to go down other than to get to this bathroom. There were initially grumblings from certain men on the shop floor about “wokeness”. Then they discovered that the privacy offered by this gender-neutral bathroom was available to them too. Now it is the go-to spot for dudes to take the foulest of dumps discreetly.

Everyone deserves a quiet bathroom and a shit so thorough it drains all tension from one’s body. I’m sure this is what MLK really had in mind when he talked about his dream.

Drive home from a week-long work trip and go into deep, introvert recharge cycle where I eat, sleep, workout, work on personal projects, and do anything but talk to strangers.

My teeth were getting increasingly sensitive. I switched to a special toothpaste and it helped but only a little. my dentist started giving me annual fluoride treatments, similar to the ones I got as a kid, and that did the trick.

My dentist says most Americans stop getting fluoride treatments at age 12 not because their adult teeth don’t benefit from it, but because our shitty insurance system simply doesn’t cover it as a preventative treatment. So with tooth pain, I have a diagnosis for which fluoride is a covered treatment.

Obligatory “do your own research” and don’t listen to random internet stranger’s dentist’s claim.

In addition to calcifying your third eye, also be wary of those darn women trying to steal your fluoridated, erm, essence.

Do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk, ice cream? Ice cream, Mandrake? Children’s ice cream!..You know when fluoridation began?..1946. 1946, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It’s incredibly obvious, isn’t it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual, and certainly without any choice. That’s the way your hard-core Commie works. I first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love… Yes, a profound sense of fatigue, a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I - I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence. I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women, er, women sense my power, and they seek the life essence. I do not avoid women, Mandrake…but I do deny them my essence.

Nothing as complicated as business accounts for me, but the failure rate on deliveries has increased for me over the last ~12 months. To where if I need a thing with some urgency, I am back to finding and buying it locally because Amazon next day shipping or whatever x timeframe shipping is not reliable.

Quick shipping with reliable ETA was my main reason for paying for Prime, so I’ll let it lapse at the end of the current subscription. I certainly wasn’t paying for access to Prime video.

Vanth,
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

Oh, weird. With all the Musk fanboys lately, I had entirely forgotten about Bezos boot lickers. Keep giving your money to corporations for their broken commitments, Daddy Bezos wants to launch another rocket and needs your charitable donations.

Vanth,
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

Amazon says one day shipping and more and more frequently fails to meet that.

When my cable company sucks, I look for a competing service to switch to. Similarly, I’m shifting from Amazon because of their failure to meet their own commitments, hoping I find an alternate that is more reliable. I am not being inconsistent.

Go ahead and defend Amazon though. You do you.

Vanth,
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

I’m going to let my subscription lapse when it runs out in ~6 months. Yes, that action just drips rage.

Vanth,
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

You doubt… what? That the year-long Prime subscription lapses after a year? … that’s what it’s designed to do…

My friend, did you not see that they are employing “The Socratic Method”? Whoever calls Socratic method first wins, those are the rules, just like calling “shotgun” to claim the front car seat.

I’ve recently learned the /s sarcasm tag is a reddit thing. What’s the term for this though and is it allowed on Lemmy? “BrO, I aM uSiNg ThE sOcRaTic MeThOd. AnSwEr My QuEsTiOn, bRo.” It is a lot more tedious to type.

Edit: in all seriousness, this thread sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole about the misuse of the socratic method. I landed on the page linked below from the University of Chicago on how they employ a modern version of the method, it articulated some of the issues I have with “AnSwEr mY QueSTiOn, bRO” bros. Key passages:

The Socratic Method is not used at UChicago to intimidate, nor to “break down” new law students, but instead for the very reason Socrates developed it: to develop critical thinking skills in students and enable them to approach the law as intellectuals.

And emphasis is mine;

The day of the relentless Socratic professor who ended every sentence with a question mark is over. University of Chicago professors who rely on the Socratic Method today use participatory learning and discussions with a few students on whom they call (in some classrooms, randomly) to explore very difficult legal concepts and principles. The effort is a cooperative one in which the teacher and students work to understand an issue more completely.

Do you clean the opening on your glass bottles?

Spouse and I have a discussion on what to do after you pour a sauce out of a glass bottle. I do nothing but my wife takes her finger and wipes the excess from the bottle before she puts the lid back on. I think touching the food is disgusting and she thinks leaving it there to gum up the lid is disgusting. What do people do?

Vanth,
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

I wipe it with a napkin, paper towel, or dish rag.

Sarcasm is regional and cultural. I moved halfway across just my own country and sarcasm is different here. My sense of sarcasm is different from my dad’s. Add in different countries, native speakers of different languages, ages, other demographic contributors. People not getting sarcasm doesn’t make them “idiots” (most of the time).

Writing so well that the sarcasm is 100% clear and apparent to all readers would be god-tier.
