foundation again choosing to accept an arms dealer as a conference sponsor.

Pathetic.

@chrism Hey Chris I came across one of your Nix videos (thankyou for spreading the good word!) and noticed a Keybase icon in your dock.

In case you had not come across it, I figured I would toss a http://keyoxide.org recommendation - nicely handling the identity side of the Keybase equation.

I established myself there before someone at Zoom HQ trips over a cable, not bothering to plug it back in.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@delegatevoid @chrism What is interesting with Keyoxide, aside from its not-dead-ness, is its open source and distributed nature.

The project was started in direct response to the Zoom acquisition, with the explicit goal of wanting something which does not run the same service risk.

delegatevoid,

@AngryAnt @chrism so it's all about identify verification, then I will take a look at it.
I was using Keybase primarily for it's chat and git features. I've never used zoom and things like Signal, Matrix, etc... just don't work here. I remember identity verification in the 90's with PGP public key servers.
Before Keybase I was using/worked on BItmessage for a while, and now I've resorted to using Delta.Chat.

Gifcities is pretty badass: https://gifcities.org/

Clicked around a bit, did a search for scifi, ended up on CYBERDYKES: https://web.archive.org/web/20091020025243/http://geocities.com/CYBERDYKES/index.html

I'm probably just gonna stay mostly offline today and pretend that is still the shape of the web.

@AngryAnt Thanks for sharing this! I'm exploding/filled with Nostalgia and even feeling "home sick" - I don't know how to explain, maybe the word is one which exists only in Portuguese: "saudade".

I had around 10 Geocities websites. My main one was in Tripod. Also some in Lycos. For each interest I'd build a new website there. The days of being a WEBMASTER.

Searching for "fishing" Gifs I landed in this one and inspected the code, everything was a table, even the separators and the borders :D

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@alfredbaudisch I didn't have ten sites, but I did have a lot of fun sharing experiments on Geocities in the late 90s. It was a very exciting web :)

Had the opportunity to bring Unsettled to the table for the first time. Taking a break mid-game, having a blast so far :)

Flaunting our not-dying-ness! Drowning in infection, one player was more or less thrown onto the Scarab as LUNA boosted up the ramp and we blast off from a sea of goo, spore, and tentacles with serious grabby issues.

We live to recklessly poke our noses in obviously dangerous places another day!

Break took longer than anticipated, but we're stocking up on snacks and going for round two.

We are getting the hang of this!

A first attempt on the second survival task of the first planet did not go well. Those those poor explorers were left to their slimey fate as we cowardly split from their timeline and reset the board when hope had long since slammed the door.

Not so today... A good balance of infection & hallucinations boosted a strong caretaker-empath team to glorious not-dead-ness!

Last explorer confidently strolled aboard the Scarab in a defiant cloud of disinfectant.

Wrapped up the home project for the break: A switchable Minecraft server setup: Multiple server definitions, one active at a time, same port.

Migrated all the minions servers over from the old, decidedly more manual, setup. There was much rejoicing.

Based on nix-minecraft, the setup is fully declarative, in addition to the server structures also generating & hosting a web interface plus some cli utilities, based on a simple list of server definitions.

We got around to trying out the Wrath of the Gods expansion for Uluk.

Had good fun! Positioning Uluk as a lighter game, I can see why you might want to keep it as an expansion and not in the base game. For us it will just be a fixed part of the game going forward.

We generally fight over building monuments anyway, so for us the added randomness promised on the box was not really there. However the advantages are more interesting than the default. Clear value-add for us.

Uluk set up on a table, early game. Focus on decks from Wrath of the Gods expansion.

This Sunday I finally got around to writing a declarative setup for the home Minecraft servers :)

Nicely accessible settings, mods, and http download of mods zip for clients. The minion is most satisfied.

Perhaps next weekend I find the time to set up a simple web interface for switching the active server and migrating over the existing servers.

@thelinuxEXP Looks like Resolve packaging is quite up to date these days (seemingly automated now) and split in the two editions: https://search.nixos.org/packages?channel=23.11&size=50&sort=relevance&type=packages&query=davinci

Could install Nix on whatever current distro and see if it addresses your concerns? IIRC this was a roadblock last you wanted to try out NixOS for a longer stretch?

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@AngryAnt Yeah, at that time, there was no way to install the Studio version, so this could be good for me!

Utech just evicted seven times more people than comprised the entirety of the company when I left.

It would seem safe to assume that the clowns who have conducted this charming human experiment all the way up & down that 7x are not to be found among those on the street.

@mozilla Is it possible to fetch earlier versions of Firefox on android?

Since mid-december Firefox has consistently crashed shortly after I start typing in the address/search bar, while opening links in the browser and navigating pages works just fine.

I see the app was updated on the 14th, so I'm assuming this to be the culprit. Having closed tabs opened this month, relaunching the app and even rebooting the device has made no difference - hence wanting to try a revert of the update.

Most of the 23rd was spent on holiday celebration stuff, but I did find a little time in the morning to upcycle a 2015 MacBook pro to running latest NixOS, full GPU w. Vulkan & Wayland support too.

The minion greatly appreciates the upgraded Roblox experience.

Next upcycle projects are replacing worn microswitches on otherwise excellent mice, and investigating a reverse-engineering project to auto-boot an old iMac with a nice display into target display mode.

@AngryAnt Apologies for the late reply and thank you for all the details! I'll definitely give this a go :) Have you noticed any differences in battery life? Does sleep/resume work when you close the lid?

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@theWarhelm Battery life is not likely to be exactly as good, given that macOS does a good amount of device-sepcific driving.

That said, modern day Linux is a whole lot better on laptops than was previously the case. You should not see a dramatic change. I would expect better than with Windows though.

When configured for it, I haven't had issues with sleep/resume on any of the macbooks. The one troublesome install I have on that front is a Surface Go 2 tablet.

Past an onslaught of flu and seemingly endless line of curve ball tasks, I finally found the time to document and distribute the C# implementation of the client-server protocol I worked on some time ago: https://gitlab.com/framebunker/matrix

It is MIT licensed, C# 10, .netstandard2.1, focus on low-allocation, stateless, exception-free, async, static implementation of API points - with simple data types, handling serialization via System.Text.Json. Plus optional stateful session type.
