Which is so weird because do they think people dumpster diving or shopping at food pantries are really cutting into their bottom line?

Like fr??

And if so, what the fuck is wrong with society (actually this applies either way, wtf, society???)???

I was going to post this somewhere else but this is a better fit I think…

Over the last two days, as a birthday gift to myself, I scratched my “two year move itch” in which the poverty of my history makes me want to relocate every 2 years on average.

I’ve owned a place for over a decade now, so to scratch my poverty move itch, I change around my setup. I can’t really go anywhere but I have a few rooms and I can move things around a bit.

So I bought myself a new bed frame. One that fits the mattress better and also keeps my cats out from under it, looks nice… whole nine. But I had to move the entire room around to make it work. It was a 6 hour job and because adhd turned into a whole weekend.

And I’m super not upset. Everything about how it went was what I expect in my life so I gave myself a whole weekend to do it and it took that and I was right. And that feels good. I deep cleaned the room as I moved everything around, and having one fully clean room is a great launch point for cleaning everything else! (Someday!)

Or the very first time you open the bag, the zip seal pulls away from the rest of the bag.

Or the seal doesn’t line up properly and can’t be zippered no matter what you do.

Or the seal is one of those cheap single layer ones that cross-threads and pops back open every time you think you’ve got it.

Or the zip opening doesn’t cover the whole bag, and you, moron you are, cut the top instead of the disturbing mouth hole they want you to use.

I end up clipping them half the time anyway… good thing large packs of wood clothes pins are still commonly available at the dollar store :)

ApathyTree,
@ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I lose them entirely too often for that to be an affordable option for me 🤭 I get like 80 clothespins for $1. I’ve gone through like 5 packs of them in 15 years, give or take.

But maybe I’d hit a level of saturation eventually (I find random clothespins all the time now) and it would work out.

Probably not - I have a habit of MacGyvering stuff from whatever I find laying around… clothespins are stupid handy for that, and binder clips would be too… so I’d definitely repurpose them… :)

ApathyTree,
@ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Clothes pins are the unsung heroes of diyers. Can they clamp small things? Yes! Can they hold things? Yes! Can they do much else? Depends what that means but those springs can be wicked handy.

Nobody admits to using them but they don’t still exist for no reason damnit.

And they are cheaper and better than the plastic alternatives. For what they are, you can’t improve them. They are perfect.

I do the same thing, but you do realize you do it -because- it’s a problem, right?

Like you shouldn’t need a separate email for “I want to buy this/sign up for this, but I know I’m going to get a fuckton of emails so I need to use this separate email address to protect my main one from junk”. That just shouldn’t be a thing.

You’ve never had a pancake dog and it shows.

It’s a breakfast sausage (light on salt or omg it would be so much) dipped in a thick pancake batter and deep fried, then drizzled with maple syrup.

Divine.

Dude, hard recommend. You’ll change your stance on sweet vs corn based (already a bit sweet).

With health coverage being tied to employment, and employment taking up every shred of energy from large swaths of the population due to very low wages and long hours (a solid chunk of said wages go directly to health coverage, and many people work a bunch of overtime or a second job just to get by), I’m not really sure how people would, by and large, have an opportunity to really do anything about it.

Like yeah, everyone hates it and wants it to change, but if you take time to protest (even if you cover it with pto), you may lose your job for the effort, even if they just find out you went or whatever. It’s not protected action, employment-wise (thanks, union busting). And any other support for it also needs a lot of time and energy…

Basically employers have set it up this way to strap us over a barrel. It’s all intentional to take away our ability to really do anything about it. Keep us slaving, cuz the alternative might just be death.

Sadly I think it’ll need to be even worse before we see large scale risk taking by the population… when you have nothing left to lose you fear no loss… until then you try to survive best you can.

Previously the only thing I knew about her came from doctor who.

But now, thanks to this painting, I also know she has no knees or a very long torso.

Their crispy potato taco is the only thing I still go there for. And that’s suuuuuuuuper rare, like once every year or two.

I’m not vegetarian or anything, it’s just the only thing worth getting imho. It’s been on their budget menu since forever.

Around here tons of people use weed vapes openly right in the bar (depending on bar’s general vape policy).

Emotion-tracking AI on the job: Workers fear being watched – and misunderstood (theconversation.com)

Emotion artificial intelligence uses biological signals such as vocal tone, facial expressions and data from wearable devices as well as text and how people use their computers, to detect and predict how someone is feeling. It can be used in the workplace, for hiring, etc. Loss of privacy is just the beginning. Workers are...

This would absolutely flag me for something. I tend to have flat delivery, low pitch, avoid eye contact, etc. and when combined with other metrics, could easily flag me as not being a happy enough camper.

I mean don’t get me wrong, I’m never going to be happy to be working, but if I showed up that day, I’m also in a good enough headspace to do my job… and if you want to fire me for that… for having stuff going on and not faking vocal patterns…

This is why I don’t want to work anymore. It’s gotten so invasive and fraught if you happen to be anything but a happy bubbly neurotypical fake. And that’s wildly stressful. I’m not a machine, and refuse to be treated like one. If that means I have to die in poverty, well, dump me in the woods, I guess.

This shit should never be legal.

"Let them eat cereal": How accusations of "greedflation" fueled consumer ire against Kellogg's (www.salon.com)

Since 2022, Kellogg has been running an ad campaign encouraging families, with the help of Tony the Tiger and Toucan Sam, to break out of their boring dinner rotation and swap in the occasional bowl of cereal. “If you’re tired of cooking chicken over and over (and the kids are bored of eating it) we’ve got something...

Alternatively you could buy a big bag of rice and a bunch of dried beans and lentils, and some frozen veggies and canned mushrooms with some cheap sauces, and eat decently for significantly less per calorie than eating breakfast cereal…. Which is expensive garbage.

I’m not married and somehow still do this?

Like I just bought myself a new bed frame and omg I’m just dying to have my partner over to see it once it’s set up (my … 37 yo self - fuck, that’s right - feels so adult!)… like ooh idk surprise I guess? The birthday fairy left it for me? Don’t judge my spending. It’s precious. My precious.

Ha sorry not you judging; partner. Who won’t either. I just have poverty spend-confidence issues. 😅 justify every large purchase. This one is “because I want it” which is difficult justification.

But it glows, precious. It has power, precious. I wanted it so much, and now it will be mine, my precious. 😊

I really wish the dems would run more progressive candidates, but time has told them to run right-leaning centerists, both because that’s what gets votes from everyone who doesn’t want to be a theocracy/dictatorship (“vote blue no matter who”), and because that’s the best the conservatives have historically been willing to work with. (Plus their owners want that, let’s be real)

They haven’t realized the rules have changed and conservatives won’t work with anyone who isn’t them, and it’s going to be their downfall. We need to fight the maga crowd with progressive candidates, not democrats. But they need to run as democrats or they stand no chance. So basically we are fucked.

ApathyTree,
@ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

That is very naive. Most places don’t have actual progressive candidates to even vote for, when they do come up they face amazing odds with smear campaigns…

To say nothing of the fact that what actual people want makes no difference. Popular support for thing going up doesn’t mean it’s more likely to be legally supported… unless rich people want it.

I think whether or not freelancers count as self employed depends heavily on what they are doing and where.

For example where I am, I have taken contracts that are w-2 (employee), because they require me to work set hours for the project, but they wanted me to work them as 1099 (self-employed), because that’s what I have done and it works better for them, and “it’s a contract, you are self-employed!”. But the law is pretty clear about what counts as self employed, and not all freelance falls under that.

ApathyTree,
@ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’ve always, since learning the fact, told people that the average temp in the state I live in is 40f, for the whole year, which is 8 stupid degrees above freezing… that’s about the same as the Siberian tundra.

But growing up I often heard “sure it’s cold but we could live in the Siberian tundra” and now I’m like ok…? And? We do basically?

ApathyTree,
@ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Do you have any citations for that?

I’m not saying you are wrong, because I’m open to new information, but that’s not ever been my understanding of how evolution works, and I’ve read a ton on the topic.

Evolution continues even if a species doesn’t obviously change over time. Unless it’s an asexual reproducing species, gene recombination ensures some level of diversity, and more opportunity for novel traits. But even a clonally reproducing species have a chance for mutations, they are just significantly more likely to be detrimental than useful.
