#500CharAbstracts: 🏺 Jeremy Smoak & Alice Mandell explore the monumentality of inscriptions in Jerusalem’s urban spaces and thereby also texts themselves. These convey memories within a larger political or social narrative than architecture.

This article is part of a broader book about monumentality across ancient civilisations published 2019 at Transcript: Size Matters.

🏺 Tepe Gawra, kurdish for “the great mound”, is situated in . The site offers an almost continuous sequence of occupation from the 5th to the 2nd millennium BCE. The “Round House” itself dates to around 4000 BCE.

Our architectural reconstruction is based upon analyses, the excavation reports, and related literature. Since the reconstruction is, of course, only tentative, we decided to illustrate the level of certainty in the model through colour coding.

@amaury_h Thanks! Well actually only the three-colored one is the restitution. The rest are just cut-offs, so one can see them better...

ArchaeoBasti,
@ArchaeoBasti@mastodon.online avatar

@amaury_h ah yes, you are right. If I remember correctly, the three-colored model was a very old student project of mine and the "realistic" model was a newer version. That's why the access changed. But overall it is a very old project

This case is especially interesting as the remains of the city are not visible any more. Special strategies were needed to create an aesthetically and educationally sound solution.

🏺 The so-called “Red House” was uncovered at the centre of the lower city of Tell Schech Hamad. It was built and utilised during the Neo-Babylonian Period (626–539 BCE), and eventually destroyed by fire.
We created a 3D model of the re-plastered remains of the “Red House” in order to gain a visual impression of the project’s possible outcome regarding the heights of its walls etc. Additionally, the visualisations were used to present the project to potential sponsors.

🏺 Heron of Alexandria (c. 10-70 CE) was a Greek-Egyptian mathematician and inventor. He lived in Roman Egypt and was a representative of Hellenistic Science. One of his inventions were automatically opening temple doors, powered by a fire altar and hydraulics.

The automated temple doors are described in his writings as invention “number 37”. The idea was, that temple doors should open automatically when a fire is lit and close again, when the fire distinguishes.

🏺 The probably three-storey ziggurat was surrounded by a complex system of walls and courts, which separated the holy district from the rest of the city. Archaeological records document various installations. Texts inform us that various activities were conducted in different courtyards.
In an extensive process, a range of secondary sources were consulted to create an image of over 4000 years ago. Over 4000 human models and 300 buildings were used in this view.

Qantir/Pi-Ramesse (House of Ramses) is situated in the Nile-Delta of Egypt, about 120 km northeast of Cairo. The city was founded by Ramesses II. in the 13th century BCE. A nearly 7-minute animation and several still images could be created during a time-span of nine months. Especially the visualisation of the horse stables was of upmost importance, as these were excavated quiet well. Besides that, the urban structure of the city was visualised very carefully.

Mari, modern Tell Hariri, located in Syria is one of the most famous sites in West Asia, and dates from the 3rd to the beginning of the 2nd millennium BCE. The excavations at the Massif Rouge, a massive red-bricked terrasse, offers a very complicated excavation and research history.
We created a detailed model of the area by hand. This form of documentation-based reconstruction was the only way to create a 3D model out of the old and new excavation data.
