#Archaeologist, got a hat (no whip though). Once known as "Yunus" among Bedouins. Demanding a revival of the venerable profession of the #ExpeditionPainter.

One of this city's most haunting #monuments isn't even particular monumental: An unsuspicious window in the middle of #Berlin’s Bebelplatz (former #Opernplatz) - bookshelves in the ground.

Empty bookshelves.

Commemorating the #BookBurning which took place right here #OnThisDay, May 10th in 1933.

Thousands of books considered 'un-German' by the Nazis were burned that night.

A ceremonially orchestrated rally, targeting authors, publications, and ideas opposed to Nazism, foreshadowing darker events still to come.

A nearby plaque quotes Heinrich Heine:

"That was a prelude only, there where they are burning books, they are burning people, too, in the end."

(From his play "Almansor" (1823), referring to the 1499 during the Spanish reconquista.)

Heine's books were among those burned at Opernplatz.

Among those witnessing the grim ritual was also author - watching his own writings going up in smoke:

"I stood in front of the university, among students in SA uniforms, the nation’s finest, and saw our books flying into the bickering flames ... It was disgusting."

@jens2go@mastodon.social avatar

suspected there was more to come too:

"May 10 is autodafé, I think the Jew of my name is also there, fortunately only of paper ... But this matter has two sides: How will it be later, in 1 year, in 2 years?"

And noted:

"So our books are burned ... In Frankfurt they dragged our books on an oxcart to the place of execution. Like a folklore society of schoolmasters."

But it was not (by far) not the only one, as the @VerbrannteOrte project explicitly illustrates with its annotated atlas of :
